Hello my dear Steemians,

Today I wanted to invite you to the challenge running by Venezolanos Steem Community:

Scottish cultural traditions: Gillie Chaluim (Sword Dance)

Every country and every nation has its own tradition and many of them have their origin from very old days, centuries ago or even longer.

Luckily many of those tradition exist till nowadays and we always will be associating them with certain country and culture.

When we first arrived to Scotland, we arrive the time when end of summer when we have had a local gathering. Few of our neighbours invited us to watch a concert where their girls were performing. That time we just thought that this is a simple show with music an dancing so did not really think that it will turn into a beautiful event.

On the way to that open air event we saw many children and some of them were dressed in traditional tartan costume. You all know that Scottish traditional cloths has means the cloths has colourful lines in both horizontal and vertical pattern. Every pattern has its belonging to certain Scottish Clan, therefore, they can recognise if the person ascend from their clan or not.

Once we reach the event, we saw many young girls who started to lie swards on the floor two in form of a cross. Then the music started and it was traditional bagpiper sound and drums and the girls started dancing at their swords. Everything was looking like a ballet and the girls were gracious.

Scottish cultural traditions: Highland Game

“Highland’s Game” by @stef1

The other great cultural event is Highland Games, that is celebrated all across Scotland and in every county in its own time. People usually prepare themselves the whole year in order to take part and also often the members of teams are also united due to their Clans and once again the recognisable feature is the colour of their traditional tartan costumes.

The Highland Games start in May and finished in September.

From ancient times men had a competition in order to show their strength, because it is an old tradition it is still not much changes and the participants compete in such competition like Hammer throwing and hammer usually made of metal ball weighing around 22 lb, that is what I decided to show on my watercolour painting.

Tossing the caber is another very exciting competition when a long log made of Scots pine is used which is about 5,94m and 79kg.

Every year we are harrying up to the festival and despite of seeing it so often we still enjoy it. I hope you also discovered something new for you.

I would like to invite @davidad, @xaviduran, @bambuka for this challenge

Thank you Eva, yes, real traditional tartan and kilts are still made of sheep yarn and they are expensive but very soft and nice on touch and look beautiful. I actually wanted my husband to order such traditional kilt but at the moment he is not keen, who knows maybe one day :)

Really interesting read... It's good that you like these 2 traditions so much From Scotland... I didn't know that clothing fabrics had a meaning, I was delighted with your post!!
Success in the challenge and blessings always!!

Thank you Ana, yes, it is indeed interesting historical tradition, I also discovered that since we moved to Scotland. Every family here has at least one set of clothes in their traditional colours :)

Thank you for reading my post and I am glad to know that you discovered such an interesting event of Highland's game. That is really something that people prepare for the whole day and always enjoy it together with family.

From one side, it is practical when we can recognise the people according their clan colours, that way people can start chatting to each other and often find some common friends and relatives :)

Saludos. Maravillosas también sus pinturas.

It is indeed interesting event that people prepare themselves for the whole year. It is very cute to see very young children, especially little girls who do their best and perform that sword dance. In their age group everyone receives the same prize, because it is not possible to say who is better. But everyone who prepared themselves and coming to festival are winner because of their preparation and their hard work prior to that. Thank you for reading and for your comment.

Saludos cordiales.

Thank you for verification and for reading my post, yes, usually WOX is the place where I posted majority of my work, many of them from beginning of journey too. Scotland is very interesting country with many recognisable features and history, the local people here are very proud of their history and I am glad that they still live them and do not let them fade.

Hello @stef1, how good the invitation they gave you was simple and it was something better and it was a very beautiful event and you can recognize by the fabric whether you belong to a clan or not, the hammer throw must be quite exciting.

We always come to this festival to see how many clans live in our area, actually even in school they already start learning about the clans and history which is very interesting and some kids spontaneously find that they are from the same clan. To see such competition is absolutely impressive, in the past I watched that in TV but live it is really entertaining :)

@stef1 Your post descriptions of the Highland Games offer a captivating glimpse into the rich heritage of Scotland. The tartan costumes the rhythmic dance with swords and the thrilling competitions like Hammer throwing and Tossing the caber bring the traditions to life. Your watercolor painting beautifully captures the essence of the Highland Games showcasing the strength and spirit of the participants. It's evident that these cultural events hold a special place in your heart and your storytelling allows readers to experience the magic of Scotland's traditions.

Greetings dear, every country is full of its own culture and it is celebrated at its specific time. You mention two traditions in Scotland, one of which is dancing in a particular costume and the other is a display of male strength by throwing heavy objects. You have captured two images of Scotland's heritage very perfectly.

I didn't know that the lines and colors in the costumes had a meaning, very interesting to know about that.
It must be beautiful to enjoy the dance of the little girls and the demonstration of Highlanders's habilities and strength.
Loved your colorwater drawing for each cultural tradition.
Thank you very much for sharing with us

Blessings
