HIP HOP LEGENDS OF 90s #3- Cypress Hill

in #hiphop7 years ago (edited)

When I was in high school, there was no better thing than get really high and in someone's car, or anywhere with little CD player or cassette player listen Cypress Hill. There is no such a good combination like cannabis and Cypress Hill. The nasal voice of B Real and funky sounds, chill but gangsta beats... Cypress Hill really make that magic.

HIP HOP LEGENDS OF 90s

CYPRESS HILL

I first learned about Cypress Hill in 1999 when I was 14.

A guy who lived in my neighborhood had few copied tapes that he bought on local fair in nearby village. I took them to make my own copies and when I first time heard it I couldn't believe. I heard both albums that I got, then again and then again. This was definitely new to me and I liked it. In just few days, I got all older albums of Cypress Hill and learned all about them. they can make good rhymes about all: rapping, life, weed, ladies, humor.

They come from South Gate, California. The members are B-Real, Sen Dog, DJ Muggs and Eric Bobo.

All these great beats come as combination of work of DJ Muggs, who works with synths and samples and Eric Bobo who is a drummer. At the beginning, B-Real supposed to be only lyricist because the sound of his voice wasn't good enough for Sen Dog and DJ Muggs. That's why B-Real developed his nasal voice and it worked perfectly. That voice made him the most recognizable MC of all times. When you hear that voice, no doubts, it is B-Real an no one else can do it. Sen Dog did a lot experiments with rock and also has a rock band, so you can hear on many tracks of Cypress Hill live played rock music instead of beats.

They were the first world famous Latino American hip hop group and they sold more than 18 million albums.

Their first album was called after them ("Cypress Hill") and it was released in 1991 for Columbia Records. They immediately became famous in US with their singles "How I Just Killed a Man" and Shoot 'Em Up".

The second album "Black Sunday" from 1993 hit the huge success with songs "Insane in the Brain", "When the Shit Goes Down" and "I Wanna Get High" and they were number 1 on Billboard 200 charts while their first album was still on the charts. They recorded also the version of the album on Spanish language.

Their third album "III: The Temples of Doom" was released in 1995 and the best tracks were "Throw Your Set in the Air", "Stoned Raiders", "Killafornia" and "Strictly Hip Hop".
After this album, the band members decided to try solo careers. This was when Sen Dog formed his rock bend, DJ Muggs cooperated with KRS One, Dr. Dre, Mobb Deep and B-Real gave big part in making of Space Jam Soundtrack.

They all got back together in 1998 and released album "Cypress Hill: IV" with awesome hits "Tequila Sunrise" and "Dr Greenthumb".

Their fifth album "Skull&Bones" was released in 2000 and it was divided on Hip Hop disk and Rap Metal Disk. So, the major hits from the album were "Rap Superstar" for hip hop public and "Rock Superstar", the same song but with live played hard core rock music in the background. In my opinion, this was their best album. Except "Rap Superstar" and "Rock Superstar", best songs were "Highlife", "Certified Bomb" and "Can't Get Best of Me".

I next year they released their sixth album "Stoned Raiders", with singles "Troubles" and "Lowrider".

Their seventh album "Till Death Do Us Part" was released in 2004 and many people claim that this was their worst album. It was much softer than others and they combined their tracks with reggae sounds. The best single from this album was "What's Your Number".

After this album they had a gap for next six years.

In 2010, they came out with the album "Rise Up" and it was received by fans and publicity much better than the last one. The best tracks were "Rise Up" and "Armada Latina".

They haven't released new album for seven years and at the moment they are recording album "Elephants On Acid".
