Take it Outside - Hiking Rock Trail to Lost Lake

It was a gorgeous fall day on Sunday. Sun was out, air was crisp, sky was blue, perfect day for a quick hike. @coruscate and I met up with a couple friends and headed out to the trail.

Now, we live in an absolutely gorgeous spot in the Pacific Northwest. Just outside of Bellingham, our little town, is a large hill/mountain that overlooks the bay. It's called Chuckanut mountain and stretches south along the coast. Most of the folks that live up in our neck of the woods are huge outdoor people so we have tons of trails and cool things to do outside all around us and Chuckanut mountain is no exception. There are great trails that stretch for miles that will take you past staggering views, massive cedar trees and beautiful lakes.

This is what the view looks like at the start of the hike. You're looking out on the Puget Sound and the many islands it holds.

We go hit up a Chuckanut hike whenever we just want to do something quick. It literally takes us about 10 minutes to get to a trail head. The trail we decided to do today is called the Rock Trail. It's a newer trail and is actually the only trail on Chuckanut that I haven't yet hiked.

The trail gets it's name from the massive limestone rocks that are visible along the way down the trail. Some of the rocks had areas that had been hollowed out which were big enough for some kids to crawl and play in. Other giant slabs of rock had over hangs and cool openings where you could imagine taking shelter in bad weather if needed.

Hollowed out caves in the rock, kids were playing in them when we passed them on the way back.

The trail down is well taken care of and you meander through beautiful forest and areas where fern covers the ground everywhere. I love hiking when the sun is out and shining through the trees and today definitely didn't disappoint.

I liked this shot of the path and stairs leading down through the sun lit forest.

It's a pretty short hike of about 1.2 miles which then pops you out on a crossing trail that you can use to head down to Lost Lake. In total it's only about 2.5 miles to get to the lake, so about a 5 mile hike when all is said and done. Lost Lake is a beautiful secluded lake that is surrounded by forest and has a little ridge path along the side of it that will give you some nice views.

Perfect spot to stop for a snack and some pics.

All in all it was a perfect hike for the day. Great views, great conversation, great exercise and a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

It's easy to see how much you love life, reflected in your writings and your photos. That moss was so beautiful, looked good enough to have a nap in. Puget Sound photo was incredible too, what a view! Next time you take us for a walk use the #walkwithme tag :) :) There's a bunch of us walkers and beauty lovers there using it now :) :) <3 <3 <3 I look forward to seeing more and more from you @raised2b <3

This was such a fun hike! I love that it was a totally impromptu thing to get outside and enjoy the sunny fall day. Seeing the kids climb into the hollowed rocks was definitely a highlight.

It was great. I'm still wishing you had tried to climb into the rocks with the kids though :)
