Today, I’d like to talk something about adolescents and the mental health, in particular

Depression

To start with, we should understand clearly what depression is.

According to the WHO: Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.

Overview (abstract), I ‘ll show you some notes of this illness:

  • Depression is a common mental disorder
  • In addition, depression is also the leading cause of disability worldwide, and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease
  • At its worst, depression can lead to suicide
  • Especially, more women are affected by depression than men
  • Fortunately, there are effective treatments for depression nowadays

The national statistics shows in global, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression. That's an alarming number.


And then, I’ll talk about the signs and the symptoms of teen depression.

There is a range of the signs of teen depression, but just 2 signs are the key signs of this illness. There are feeling down or hopeless constantly and they have really little interest or pleasure in doing things they used to enjoy.
Besides, there are some possible signs and symptoms that we need to know. Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include:

  • Irritability or restlessness
  • Yes, they feel tired all the time, or a general loss of energy
  • They always feel empty inside and lonely
  • Feeling bad about themselves or things they have done always exist inside their spirit
  • They have also many problems with concentration
  • Even reducing sex drive
  • Thinking about death a lot and feeling anxious. In many cases, depression is often seen like a worry, so people often ignore this sign.

Most people are usually difficult to distinguish between depression and sadness.
I’ll show the difference between depression and sadness.

  • Depression: the person experiences depressed mood, loss of interest and enjoyment, and reduced energy leading to diminished activity for at least two weeks. In major depression, feelings of worthlessness and self-loathing are common.

  • Compared to the depression, sadness is usually triggered by a difficult, hurtful, challenging, or disappointing event, experience, or situation. In grief, self-esteem is usually maintained


After that, I’ll present some contributing factors and the prevention of teen depression.

  • Depression results from a complex interaction of social, psychological and biological factors. Especially environmental factors: Continuous exposure to violence, neglect, abuse or poverty may make some people more vulnerable to depression.
  • There are interrelationships between depression and physical health

About the prevention, there are 2 effective measures to prevent this illness.

  • The fist is school-based programmes to enhance a pattern of positive thinking in children and adolescents.
  • And the second is Interventions for parents of children with behavioral problems that may reduce parental depressive symptoms and improve outcomes for their children

In summary, there are 3 important points of my post

  • Depression can affect anyone
  • It leads to a variety of emotional and physical problems
  • And even decreasing a person’s ability to function at work and at home
