Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infectious diseases caused by bacteria (gonococci, treponemes ...), viruses (hepatitis B, herpes, HPV, CMV, AIDS ...) or parasites (chlamydia, trichomonas vaginalis ...). These diseases are seen in all countries of the world.

Frequency

According to the World Health Organization, the 250 million cases of STDs that occur each year worldwide, including trichomoniasis (120 million), chlamydial infection (50 million), genital warts ( 30 million), gonorrhea (25 million), genital herpes (20 million), syphilis (3.5 million), hepatitis B virus (2.5 million), chancroid (2 million) and AIDS-related HIV (more than 1 million people and 36.9 million HIV-positive people worldwide in 2014), which has become one of the most common STIs in the world, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa .

In Africa, gonorrhea accounts for 40% of African prostitutes, syphilis 20%, chlamydia 15%, genital herpes 10%, chancroid and dovanosis 5%. Viral hepatitis B is twenty times more common than in the West. 80% of prostitutes and 12% of non-prostituted women in Black Africa are HIV-positive.

Signs of the disease

STDs are manifested by genital involvement (gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, condyloma, etc.) or generalized infection (syphilis, hepatitis B, AIDS).

In women, leucorrhea is vaginal, abundant, white or tinged secretions. They are accompanied or not by troublesome clinical signs: irritations, burns, itching, spontaneous pains or during sexual intercourse. They sometimes go unnoticed by the woman and are only discovered on medical examination.

In men and women, urethritis results in urethral discharge, burning when urinating or the presence of filaments in the first few milliliters of urine.

Genital ulceration and inguinal lymphadenopathy are other suggestive symptoms.

AIDS : The most dangerous sexually transmitted disease!!

Aids (or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a viral disease caused by HIV.
The agent of AIDS is a Lentivirus, HIV (HIV-1 and HIV-2) for human immunodeficiency virus. It infects the cells of the immune system, the T4 cells that have the proper receptor (the CD4 protein), but can also infect other cell types.

Transmission of AIDS

The transmission of the virus involves certain body fluids, in which there are viral particles. The transmission is then possible by sexual means (by the genital secretions), by blood (by transfusion or by sharing of syringes) or materno-fetal (by passage hemato-placental, during childbirth or during the breastfeeding) .
According to estimates by WHO and UNAIDS, 33.4 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2008.

Symptoms of AIDS

There are three phases of infection with the AIDS virus.

1.Primary infection, where the number of virions present in the body increases sharply just after infection, then decreases rapidly through the action of the immune system.

2.There is then an asymptomatic phase, where the patient has no symptoms of the disease. However, T cells are progressively destroyed by HIV. At this point, the individual then has antibodies against the virus: it is said to be HIV positive.

3.When the immune system is too weak (destruction of CD4 lymphocytes and macrophages), which can take 10 to 15 years or more, the symptoms of the disease appear: it is AIDS. Opportunistic diseases occur, including tuberculosis, but also pneumonia or herpes, or cancer (Kaposi's sarcoma, lymphoma ...).

AIDS treatments
It is not yet possible to cure AIDS because the genome of the virus integrates into the cells and therefore remains in a latent state, invisible to the immune system. It is therefore important to protect oneself from infection, for example by using a condom.
However, there are treatments to slow the progression of the disease to the AIDS stage. They are composed of antivirals, insufficiently effective alone, but rather effective when taken in a group. When they are three, we talk about triple therapy.

Prevention

Apart from chastity, "safe sex" and fidelity, the only method of preventing STDs (apart from vaccination against hepatitis B) is the correct use of the male condom every time you have sex.
WHO recommends circumcision since it reduces by 60% the possibility that a man is infected with the virus during a heterosexual relationship.

For all these proofs, you must move away from forbidden relationships to avoid serious illness.
