Control Breadth; Control Mind

Our Breathing is responsible for all the vital functions happening within our body....
Our Body needs a continuous flow of energy to sustain and survive. There are ways to survive without food for a longer duration but there is no way we can survive without the oxygen flow in our body which we take in through our breathing, hence we can decide by our self how important our breadth is for us. Our Breadth is the continuous flow of Energy even known as the CHI that keeps the very life force going.

Yoga teaches a lot of Breathing practices that can alter all the defects within the physical body. The Practice also known as Pranayama where;
Prana means breathing and
Yama means the conscious manipulation.

Which together means a controlled and conscious breathing.

A controlled breathing brings a lot of benefits not only to the body but to the mind also. It relaxes the mind and soothes out the built up stress. At a physical level most of the disorders in the body are due to lack of required blood supply to the entire body, when we can tackle this by allowing a good amount of oxygen flow in the body we can eliminate many problems in the physical body.

Let me explain to you the 2 most simple yet the most beneficial Breathing practices
Anulom vilomb and Kapalbhati Both of these can help to bring in an order within our physical body. Most of us do not realize our breathing pattern also. A lot of us have very shallow breathing, or a high breathing or low breathing.
Low breathing is ok but the shallow and high breathing is not at all good for the body.

Even if we are not conscious through out the day of your breathing patterns and dedicate sometime during the meditation practice on our breathing it will help.

Steps for Anulom vilomb - The Alternate nostril breathing

  • Sit in crossed leg position preferably on the floor, if not possible sit on a chair with your back in upright position and not leaning at the back rest.
  • With the right thumb close the right nostril and breathe in with the left nostril, filling up your lungs with air as much as you can.
  • Release the thumb from right nostril and with the little finger close the left nostril and simultaneously breathe out from the right nostril and then slowly breathe in filling up your lungs.
  • Slowly release the little finger from the left nostril and cover the right while simultaneously exhaling from the left.
  • This will be one cycle. A minimum of 15 cycles which would take around 7 to 9 minutes depending on the speed are very effective for the body.

Steps for Kapalbhati -

  • Sit in crossed leg position preferably on the floor, if not possible sit on a chair with your back in upright position and not leaning at the back rest.
  • Take a deep breath till your lungs are filled up and your abdomen expands
  • Exhale out with a stroke giving pressure to the muscles. The abdomen will go inside and you will feel the pressure there.
  • A daily 5 minutes practice is very helpful for the body.
  • If you have a High BP problem then the kapabhati should be avoided or done at a very slow pace

You can try this out during your practice and see for yourself after you finish how you feel.

A good breathing practice has a whole lot of benefits, these are just few of them;

  • Helps detoxify body
  • Helps reduce stress
  • Controls BP
  • Good for Nervous system and Heart
  • Better Digestion

During the day also while doing any activity you can consciously focus on your breathing and increase your breadth time. Breathe in to a count of 8, hold for a count of 6 and breathe out to a count of 4. Even this simple exercise will help.

Excellent advice here, I try to control my own stress levels through heavy breathing but it often ends up being frustrated snorts and grunts.

I'm sure controlling breathing does improve many aspects of our lives, thank you for sharing .

Alternative breathing is a life saver for me as it calms and balances. Breath of fire makes me too anxious and wired at the moment.
