Mate or sometimes called 'Yerba tea' in Spanish, is a traditional drink in South America.

Maybe this will help somebody...
to those who try to live healthier or try to drink less coffee or not drink it at all...or are looking for an energy boost in the morning and day :)

I am that person, who can't drink coffee, it makes me feel faint and bad...like, heart hurts, I see black in my eyes, it's just too much for me.
But don't get me WRONG! I do like a good Latte or Cappuccino, I've been to Italy and tried the REAL thing and it was amazing! but I see coffee more as a desert, or a leisure time thing and I don't feel GREAT! afterwords...WORTH IT

I was on a search...I can't wake up in the morning and I love morning IF I could appreaciate them...I had a two year thing, where I had to make myself used to GREEN TEA. IT is alright. I love the drink, but it was not enough.

I remembered... a telenovela 'Muneca brava' with Natalia Oreiro, where her character would drink Mate like crazy! You could see her almost in any given scene with that traditional Mate mug and a 'bombilla'a kind of a special straw that you drink Mate from.
I.GOT.OBSESSED.
I had to have it! <3 Or else, according to ME, I'd be not 'COOL'. Me as a kid, I had no one to show of to, but that was 'no big deal' for me...I had to prove it to myself! That I am 'THAT cool'!

I collected my coins, found a special 'tea house' where they sell Mate, the special 'Mate mug' and 'Mate straw'. As a kid, you could imagine, I put up a front in front of my parents and grandparents, walking around and parading myself and pretending to LOVE the drink :D 'coz I've spend my own pennies on it
If only I knew I would drink it with pleasure years from then ...

and so years later, the mug and straw now are a hidden treasure in my grandparents basement, still to be found, but...
I drink MATE TEA each morning!

There are variations of Mate:

  • 'Terere' is a paraguayan Mate
  • 'Chimarrao' is a brazilian Mate
  • 'Mate de coca' is made from coco and is from Peru and Bolivia
  • 'Materva' is a Mate 'drink', popular in the USA

Pretty variations of the 'special Mate' straw. That is called 'Bombilla' in Spanish, 'a bomba' in Portugese and 'bombija' or ''masassa' in Arabic.

Back then, I did not knew, what an awesome drink this is!

It contains :

  • Vitamins. A/ C / E / B1/ B2/ Niacin or known as B3/ B5 / B vitamin Complex
  • Minerals. Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Selenium, potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc
  • Other compounds as... Carotene; Fatty acids; Chlorophyll; Flavanoids; Polyphenols; Trace mineral; Inositol; Antioxidants; Tannins; Panthotenic acid and 15 amino acids.

Some of the health benefits from this amazing drink.

To me, it helps me get energy,be more focused those with bad immune system will understand and heavy fatigue, if you don't get enough sleep.
I wake up with it pretty well and get my daily dosage of vitamins and other good stuff per day.

DON'T...

  • drink it too much! Because it has the 'natural caffeine' in it, you can't drink an entire 1l per day ...why? First of all, if will start harming you and your health, you might get insomnia over a while and ... because it fights cancer cels, it might do the opposite...so be careful!
I drink it in the morning and during or right after lunch...to keep me energized.
  • don't drink it too cold or too 'HOT'. It usually is prepared with lets say, very warm water, but not all the way 'burning hot'. That way it will be prepared as it should and will help you and not harm you.

Found this 'recipe' of a more 'healthier' version of a 'Latte'.

I wrote this from the heart,...<3

P.S.
You drink it 'raw'. WITH the tiny leave peaces inside, through that sipping straw, that is coated with silver or OUT of silver, so you would NOT 'inhale'/'eat' any of the leaves and you drink it SLOOOW. Enjoying it.

Ask me stuff if you'd like :)

Sort:

Thank you! The taste is a little bit 'richer' than green tea and you can add a little bit of sugar or brown sugar or any other stuff you like, but if you want the full benefits of it, it takes getting used to the 'raw' taste

waiting for more from you mylifeasgoda! keep motivating!

Thank you! I always actually have articles or my own drafts in a huge notebook, but I try to upload one at a time. Some are really long and some are short. It varies...from my mood and what I want to share THAT day or the other. I write poetry, I share my own experiences, things I love and hobbies of mine, like movies, history, problems of any kind, healthy living, geeky stuff, etc. I have an upcoming idea anything and everything about ancient Egypt, 'coz that has been my passion since I can remember, but I have to sit down and start from SOMEWHERE :D

So glad I found this post. Bought myself some mate while on a trip, but I don't know much about it (I knew the name from books or movies, perhaps!). I only tried it once and it was pretty strong, especially after a big cup of coffee - not such a good idea! I'll try it with honey!

There you go! I am so glad someone is 'helped' in any way about this. Well...if you drink it from that 'tarditional' mug, you put a lot of it in, very very warm aaaalmost hot water and sip it very slowly through a traditional silver or silver coated straw, then you don't 'inhale' any of the tiny leave peaces and I guess your body 'takes' the tea better that way. I drink it 'raw' too, but from a huge mug and I wait for some of it to fall to the bottom..I HAVE to buy the straw thing...so much easier....

Hm. This is actually a really interesting article. I have never heard of Mate tea but when I have tea I preferred plain, without anything.
Occasionally I still enjoy a macha latte or maybe red tea, but nothing beats the plain old brewed tea.
upvote and resteeming for you :)
Keep up the good work!
LOL... proving yourself that you are a cool kid, that is something I never came across before. To me, cool and blend in was never really my cup of tea (pun intended); I was more of a rebel when I was a kid, although I do respect authority figures. LOL.

Thank you! :) That's the thing,...I always did what I wanted, I had that freedom given to me by my parents,...I just would give myself these 'tasks' of being 'cool'. It's a strange thing indeed :D TRUST me, I was a wild child, and no one could stop me, but those were my own standarts to myself...I remember I never even had anyone to show of to, but I had to be my own kind of cool.
I drink all kinds of tea. This one, In the morning and noon, sometimes I change things up, drink peppermint tea or green tea, etc. I love tea! there will be more articels like so, but I do write kind of what I want and in no order :)

That sounds great @mylifeasgoda !
My parents and I started planting mints but they are more successful than me. So yes. I just encouraged them to make mint tea, especially seniors might need this once a while to help regulate any stomach air inside the bowel system. :)
I love green tea, peppermint tea and I occasionally go for chamomile tea. Now I have just started drinking home made mulberry leave tea. It helps my mom's eyes to slowdown her cataract worsening so that is another plus in the tea family.

Oh! I need to drink something like that...I can't see far away ,don't know what is that called and blueberries help...WELL, even I get to be reminded of the great things all kinds of tea does :)

Also! When I get an 'upset' stomach or my guts or anything in the diggestive system, I drink raw caraway. Just put boiling water on them and it fixes things right away...that seriously helps my mom and gramma, maybe that will help :)
