PCOS- A nightmare for women! How and Why?

in #health7 years ago (edited)

As I mentioned in my previous post here, I decided to leave Mauritius for England. In July 2013, I entered United Kingdom and like everyone else I was amazed by the city of London. But on the other hand, I was missing home. However, I was diagnosed with PCOS by my doctor after spending some months there. I was speechless.

He explained to me what PCOS was and made it clear that there was no medication for cure.  One of the main symptoms of PCOS is weight gain and there was no doubt, why I gained so much weight in such less time. I am very caution about my diet and all. Yes, I agreed that for some days, I enjoyed the different restaurants types that London City has.

What is PCOS?

It is said that Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects 12-18% of women of reproductive age and also up to 21% in some high-risk groups, such as Indigenous women. It affects a woman’s ovaries, the reproductive organs which produces estrogen and progesterone — hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle. The ovaries also produce a small quantity of male hormones called androgens.

Its three main types are:

 · cysts in the ovaries

 · high levels of male hormones

 · irregular or skipped periods

Diet and lifestyle tips to treat PCOS

Treatment for PCOS generally starts with lifestyle changes like weight loss, diet, and as well exercise. Losing just 5 to 10 per cent of your body weight can help regulate your menstrual cycle and improve PCOS symptoms. Weight loss can also improve your cholesterol levels, lower insulin, and reduce heart disease and diabetes risks. Any other diet that helps you lose weight can help your situation.

However, some diets may have pluses over others. Exercise is even more helpful when combined with a healthy diet. Diet plus exercise helps you drop more weight than either intervention alone, and it also lowers your risks for diabetes and heart disease.

Some common medical treatments

Birth control pills and other medicines can help regulate the menstrual cycle and treat PCOS symptoms like hair growth and acne.

· Birth control

· Metformin

· Clomiphene

· Hair removal medicines

· Surgery

Birth control pills and the diabetes drug metformin can to support bring back a normal menstrual cycle. Clomiphene and surgery normally help to improve fertility in women with PCOS. Hair removal medicines can rid women of undesirable hair.

Summary

PCOS can disturb a woman’s menstrual cycles and make it tougher to get pregnant. High levels of male hormones also lead to uninvited symptoms like hair growth on the face and body. Lifestyle interventions are the first actions doctors recommend for PCOS, and they often work very well. Weight loss can treat PCOS symptoms and improve the chances of getting pregnant. Diet and aerobic exercise are the two most effective ways to lose weight.

Medicines are a possibility if lifestyle changes don’t work. Birth control pills and metformin can both reinstate more normal menstrual cycles and relieve PCOS symptoms.

My personal experience

Already 4 years gone since I was diagnosed with PCOS. I changed my lifestyle and I take birth control pills. My doctor said that there is improvement since the day 1. However, I have not been cured completely. There is a long way to go. I am a size plus model now and I am more than happy to be one :)

In my next post, you will be able to get to know about natural remedies for PCOS. Stay tune!

Now tell me which one do you prefer :)

Just curious if you had symptoms of PCOS before moving to London? Diet and exercise are really important for PCOS as well as making sure to avoid xenoestrogens (Which are chemicals that mimic hormones.).

The birth control pill just controls the hormones and menstrual cycle by brute force it doesn't actually regulate them. Which is why women have the fertility issues since they don't get to the root problem.

I am interested to see what you come up with in your follow up post for natural remedies.

Well before flying to London I visited my doctor in Mauritius and he said that everything was fine, though I had irregular menstruation. But when I entered UK, I was bleeding non stop during two months therefore I decided to meet the doctor where I made several tests and I was diagnosed with PCOS. He put me on birth control pills and ask me to change my diet. It has been already 4 years now and there was no change hence I decided to stop the pills and opt for natural remedies and I also joined gym...
I will share this experience soon :) Keep visiting.. followed you!
