Trying To Reverse Decades Of Sedentary Living

For some who might have invested many years in a sedentary lifestyle, they might think that it's too late for them to try and reverse the impact of those choices because they think they're too old to get started.

But research shows that the mid-life years might be the perfect time to get started, when it comes to possibly boosting heart function and overall health.

One of the previous studies on this subject was published only a couple of months ago in the journal Circulation. And in that paper, researchers discussed their results from a 2-year study and where they found that even for those who started working-out in their early or mid 50s, after years of inactivity, that they showed considerable improvement in their heart function and health.

The participants in the study had exercised 3x per week for roughly 30mins, with low-intensity base training workouts. They later increased the effort, working out for longer periods of time; the most they ever did was 4 or 5 times a week for roughly 180 mins. To increase difficulty they also added interval training to their routine.

They were able to increase their aerobic fitness ability by roughly 18 percent, they also improved cardiac compliance, and more.

Researchers concluded that regular exercise training could play a critical role in possibly helping to prevent against any future risk of heart failure.

Not only could it help to prevent issues down the road, but it also has the ability to reverse damage that's already been done.

Other researchers have previously suggested that they have found the benefits aren't the same for those who might be starting to reverse their lifestyle later on, such as in their mid 60s.

This is why they suggest that between the ages of 45-64 might be the ideal time to get started.

Several years ago, at the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, the presenter David Matelot had suggested that the heart appears to be amendable to modification with the help of endurance training, even if you are getting started later in life.

In another separate research report from the Mayo Clinic, researchers found that for adults in their late 40s, who maintained a moderate exercise routine or worked on trying to improve their fitness ability, had effectively lowered their mortality rate by about 40 percent.

This is good news for those who might have spent many years neglecting their health and embracing a sedentary lifestyle. Researchers want people to know that they can restore their health to a certain degree, even if they are getting started later on in life.

It's never to late to get off the couch and get active.

Running for the win. I’ve recebtly started running again and it really does make you feel great. Not immediately afterwards (I like to push it) but a couple of hours later and I want to go again!

And in the other direction, having a healthy mind helps us feel physically healthy as well. When considering ourselves as one system instead of a combination of mental and physical, we can appreciate the interaction is what we are experiencing in the moment. One of my uncles who is about 47 years old started two years ago light and simple workout, and now he is quite fit and healthy. I do personally feel that it is never too late to change one's life style to other, because human capacity is an amazing thing blessed by the God.

A good idea. It fits in well with "prepping as a lifestyle", as a lot of prepping involves picking up physical skills.

Eg: the water's gone. You need water. Where do you get it from? how do you get it?

How far can you lug a full 5-gallon jug?

I'm finding lots of benefits of endurance training, not just cardiovascular but also kidney function etc.

I don't work out a lot, usually three to four times per week, but the difference in my fitness and ability has changed dramatically over the last year.

I just completed my fourth ultra marathon this weekend, and while it was a hard run (actually, a very hard run) the only limiting factor for me was cramping calves because I went out a bit too hard on the first two big hill climbs.

A year ago I wold never have even dreamed of doing this. But now it is all doable and I'm looking for a bigger challenge.

I started running when I was 52. I had been reasonably active before that, but the longest I had run was probably 5km (and that nearly killed me!).

So if you are thinking about getting into some endurance sport, I'd say go for it. You never know where it might lead you.

I don't know about the 10 minutes but walking is good though you need to get the heart rate up to certain level. I think they say you should have to walk till you cannot sing and not easy to talk.
