Can't Trust Your Eyes. A Short Halloween Story

I've seen strange things people. I mean I'm from a place where witchcraft is normal and people fly at night but this one time I was caught off guard. Had me all paranoid for a while.

My name is Nsikan Ortom. I'm from Deichire Community in the Southern part of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. My Community is a small one. We were about 408 the last head count.

Let me share my story with you. It is a love story. I think.

Amaka and Eddy had been best friends since childhood. They were classmates from kindergarten and grew more inseparable as they grew up. It was a match made in heaven. So we thought.
In January, Amaka shocked the entire community when she announced she was getting married. It wasn't to Eddy. He was just as confused as we were but either his brain had refused to accept this new information or he was the best damn liar I ever knew. Eddy was cool. Even made a few jokes. To make the matter even weirder Eddy offered to chaperone her to the wedding and she agreed!
When the time for the traditional marriage came, they got on a convoy of 5 cars and took the 3 hours trip to Amaka's village.

After a few weeks Eddy and Amaka returned as husband and wife. We all took it as a big practical joke they had played on us. Amaka moved from her parents house to Jerry's apartment.
Then the accidents started. 2 days after the latest couple started their lives together a big accident happened in front of their house. 5 cars were involved. 9 dead, only 1 survivor.
The next month a big accident happened, this time in the industrial area, 13 people lost their lives.
The following month, another accident. 6 women and 3 children returning from church on a bus were killed when a gas tanker exploded next to them.
It was at time point that the Community became agitated. They blamed the petrochemical companies driving through the Community for being careless and blocked all routes to stop them from passing. But the following month two taxi ran straight into each other killing the drivers and passengers in the flames that erupted.
The community head cried for a spiritual cleansing and some pastors started leading prayer sessions.
During one of those prayer sessions a pastor had a vision. He said the whole community should gather in the town square that night for an important announcement.
During the night meeting he revealed that he saw two demons killing people in the community. He was quickly dismissed and the crowd was about to disperse when we head a loud scream. I rushed towards the origin of the noise meeting many shouts of "Jesus , Jesus".

"Where is she? "
"Where did she go?"

"Who are you taking about?" I asked
"A...a...Amaka. she vanished" a visually petrified beans hawker said. I looked at the middle of the crowd to see a large unoccupied space. That was when I saw Festus. Festus was quickly rapping a story to everyone interested to here.

Now Festus was one of the people in the convoy that went to Amaka's village for the traditional marriage.
Apparently on their way back from the traditional wedding they had been involved in a big accident. A speeding trailer couldn't hit a turn completely and its tail smashed into the first two vehicles in the convoy sending them rolling down the side slopes. Eddy was in the second vehicle and Amaka was in the third with her husband. The third and fourth cars got engulfed completely in the gas explosion that followed and only Festus survived the shockwave from the 5th car. All this while he had been hospitalised and that was why he was unable to return. He had run into Amaka at the community meeting and when he shouted her name she vanished into thin air.
The crowd immediately started looking for Eddy but he too was nowhere to be found.

An envoy was sent to Amaka's village and they confirmed they had received the bad news of the couple's demise months ago. The visitors were even taken to their graves.

To think that Eddy played soccer with us and his wife cooked and danced with the women.

It still gives me the chills.

Some girl said she would dress up as Amaka this Halloween.
"Trick or treat" she practiced. Her mother gave her a hot slap.
I don't blame her. You never know what might happen.
