Trick Or Treat: Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid

in #halloween6 years ago (edited)

My submission to the Trick or Treat of the Halloween contest initiated by @steemitboard.

Halloween has always been my favorite celebration. Perhaps it helps that my birthday is the next day, on All Saints Day. The family used to tease me that the witches brought me - not a stork ... a witch! I didn’t mind the idea.

A treasured Halloween doll I received for my birthday.

Our current Halloween was derived from the pagen festival called Samhain celebrated by the Celtics. Today it is known as All Soul’s Day in some religions.

This makes perfect sense to me as in Celtic Folklore it is the one time of the year when the doors of the invisible world are left unguarded and many spirits/souls can come through the thin veil that separates our worlds.

A photo I edited from a wood fire I photographed. It’s to symbolize the different souls coming through the veil.

Yes, your deceased animals can come through too and make an appearance.

The guardian, who protects the doorway to our world, steps aside on Halloween Eve (All Hallow’s Eve) to let the spirits roam freely until midnight October 31st.

This is all well and good if it is the appearance of a deceased loved one you wanted to see again but beware...some naughty spirits can come through the open doorway and play tricks and pranks.

On Halloween Eve, I always light a couple candles and leave them in the windows in honour of the dead. In ancient times candles would be lit along driveways and in windows in the hopes someone they loved, who was deceased, would come through from the invisible world and visit them.

Since I already told my story on #seasonchallenge about some of my experiences and the pranks pulled Halloween Eve, I will write about... my brother’s experience on all Hallow’s Eve.

Brothers are always putting on a good front, acting all brave when ghost stories are told and dismissing any idea of spirits. When Bro first got his driver’s license he was in the car every spare second and would use any excuse to have a chance to drive.

There was a old vacant two-storey house about a 1/2 mile off the main road. It was humoured to be haunted and one Halloween night he said he would drive my younger sister and brother to the haunted house rather than take them to trick or treat.

He was hoping to scare them at the haunted house but it backfired.

When they got there the front door was open, swinging on one hinge in the evening breeze. They went in to investigate and saw there was still evidence of the folks who used to live there. Curtains still hung on the windows, dishes in the cupboard and some wooden chairs in the kitchen. In the living room was a tattered green couch that had seen better days.

Bro looked around, got an uneasy feeling and said,

This place gives me the creeps. Get in the car, you two before someone comes down those rickety stairs and grabs you.

Frightened, my little brother and sister clambered quicky into the back seat as bro, alone in the front seat, spun the car wheels out of the grassy driveway and headed for the main road.

As Bro manvered the car through the 1/2 mile of gravel road, he left a sudden chill and turned the heater up. By the time they reached the main road the coldness still remained and my siblings in the back seat started to complain.

I’m cold. It feels like a refrigerator in here.

No matter how high Bro turned the heater up, the inside of the car remained freezing. Then he felt something drawing his attention over to the passenger side of the car which was empty. There he noticed a large depression in the seat.

Funny, he thought,

I never noticed the passenger seat sunk down as if someone was sitting in it.

At one time many trains ran through the village and there still was a stop sign where the tracks still existed. It was a couple miles to reach the track where he brought the car to a halt.

Bro’s eye widened as the depression of the seat rose as if someone had gotten up and out of the car at the old railway crossing. The seat then went back to it’s natural shape with no depression.

To the amazement of my Bro and the happiness of my little brother and sister, the coldness also left the car and it became warm.

Did a spirit hitch a ride with my brother to the village? Was it someone coming through the veil at All Hallow’s Eve or was it a spirit that never left the vacant house, even after death?

Whatever it was that made the strange depression in the passenger seat left an indelible impression on Bro.
