adding Sourcefinder (with no WUs) to the whitelist and its effects

in #gridcoin7 years ago (edited)

Here is a quick summary of the events from the last 3 weeks:

July 12:

July 26:

  • poll finished, but it will take now 9 days to add the project into the superblock (on August 3)
  • I post my concerns about the validity/legitimacy of this and the other 4 polls (see here)

August 3:

August 4:

  • WU status: "ETA is another few weeks unfortunately." (reply by the organization that is "responsible" for Sourcefinder)
  • I tweet: repeating the 5 whitelist polls from July (mag zero,...) would have been much less 'PR damage' than what we've now
  • reply by Sourcefinder admin here
  • a new superblock came today, and strangely the total magnitude even increased, for less users (see here)

August 5:

  • after 57h SourceFinder was removed from the whitelist (see here). The ongoing poll to remove it has become useless now.

---

  • see comments below: it seems: all users with RAC < 10 will be filtered out, so it'll be progressively more unfair.
  • btw: the 9 Sourcefinder users were anonymized, b/c it is not their fault: they just got lucky and profit from it

... and other people must work their a**es off, to get cents :(

August 4: new SB came, so here a new table (see above):

  • total magnitude seems to have risen 400 points, to now: 5771 magnitude
  • not 9 users anymore, but 8

I'd actually expect that the total magnitude would be same on both days... strange

I was under the impression this would be added once work units were available. The lead researcher has stated that we may not see any WUs until late September, meaning there will be about 100k GRC handed out for no work until then (assuming the 48k/day mint target).

Lets remove it. This should be a common sense decision. Everyone who voted it in would have done so under the impression there would be WUs, so lets add it when there are WUs.

Who can remowe it? Do we need poll results for that? How long it will take???

Only Rob can remove it, but in this case it is probably fair to assume the community voted it in once there is work instead of having to repeat the poll process once to remove it, and then again to add it again.

Was iFoggz aware of the issue with users getting free GRC when he posted that?

I ask, as at first I wasn't aware of the issue and therefore my first reaction was (from Discord):

"Not Happy someone has decided to place a poll to remove Sourcefinder
😡1
Seriously, we have a supportive project dev, we know a load of workunits are incoming in the next 2-3 weeks and the project will be ongoing into next year. It's HTTPS. What else do you want!?!"

I also voiced similar on IRC. When I realised the issue however I understood the need for some action, I just disagreed with the need for more votes.

I completly agree with this way of working, it appears we have uncovered a bug/feature which we can deal with in future (greylisting). In the meantime we should try and keep to the spirit of the vote result whilst keeping things fair for all users.

I think your statement about the RAC is incorrect

it seems: all users with RAC < 10 will be filtered out, so it'll be progressively more unfair.

@ravonn reached out to me about it but we determined it wasn't the case.

that statement was by ravon originally, it seems he is investigating more, since I saw this:

  • "it seems to be RAC but snapped to some scale"

Please strike your comment in the post until ravon sais this is the case.

who are the users ? names , nicks, cpids ?

you can find them on gridcoinstats (but I think it's not their fault, so they shouldn't be treated now badly or so)

we "know" the users or just default ?

Free GRC:

One buggy coin is this GRC...

There is nothing buggy about Gridcoin. That being said, this project should not be in the whitelist yet based on the fact there is no work for up to 2 months.

How is this not a bug? To give someone 100k GRC (3000$) for no work - just like that?
OMG!!!

It's not a bug. It was a misinterpreted poll/vote.

It's not buggy. It was voted in as a new project and wasn't supposed to be activated before it had WUs to provide.

It will soon be deactivated and added back in once the project is running properly.
