Learn Something New Every Day Contest. Day 5

in #gogogadgetupvote7 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemit World!

So let me tell you what I have learned. Running two daily contests and judging both of them and creating posts for both of them every day is a lot of work. Plus, I need a new keyboard, half of the keys on this one stick, and really makes typing up ANYTHING a dreaded chore. But that's okay. These contests are a ton of fun, and I hope you guys are enjoying them and learning as much from them as I am.

Contest Day 4!

There is a link to the previous days contest!

There are just too many great entries for me to pick just one of them. I recommend just clicking that link above and checking out the comments section of that post. There are some really fun and interesting facts there. I would love to tell you guys all about them, but I still have to go back to that post and pick my favorites and the winners. I just wanted to get this post up and available for submissions as I am already behind on this contest. The link is there, it is just easier for you to check out the post. Maybe give an Upvote or two in the comments section if you come across a fact that you didn't know, or read something that makes you laugh. My favorite thing on the platform is still being able to pay others (and get paid myself) just for talking to each other!

Rules for participation.

Tell me Something I Don't Know.

Leave me a meaningful comment below with a random bit of trivia knowledge (if you don't know what a meaningful comment is, make sure you read the post by @ogochuckwu linked at the bottom of this post). It doesn't have to be the most fantastic bit of knowledge, it just has to be true. If you post something really hard to believe, I may ask you to cite your source or link me to something that backs up your bit of info. If you cannot provide me with SOMETHING (a webpage, a news report, ANYTHING) to back up you claim I will not consider it a valid entry and I will not Upvote your entry. If you say something like "One thousand years ago, homo sapiens were an average of 12 feet tall. My teacher in third grade taught me that", I am probably not going to believe you. Like I said, it just has to be true (and somewhat verifiable).
All entrants will get a small Upvote for participating, (One Entry Per Person Per Day!!!) and my top three favorite will receive a 100% Upvote, a 75% Upvote and a 50% Upvote for teaching me something new that day.
Replies need to be in English or translated to English (If I can't read it, I can't judge it). You have about twenty three hours (give or take an hour depending on what time I get online that day) to make submissions to this post, at which time I will give out rewards and post the new Day's contest. Be sure to check the comments and support the other entrants. I highly encourage engagement in the comments section, and the vast majority of my Upvote power is used on comments. Earning rewards just for talking to each other is my favorite part of the platform, and I highly recommend Upvoting each others entries in the replies to this post! If the first three comments have Upvotes from me (the first one will be about a dollar), then I have already given out prizes for this contest, but the next one will be out shortly!
You must Upvote this post to be considered a "valid entry". This is not because I want the rewards from your vote. This is because I rent delegated Steempower to provide larger Upvotes as prizes to my contests, and your Upvote on this post helps me pay for that delegation, and spread more rewards to more users!

As always, thanks for taking the time to read my post!

Do you know that during the cold winters, the Alaskan Wood Frog becomes a frog shape block of ice. It stops breathing, and it's heart stops beating. When the spring arrives, the frog thaws and returns to normal going along its merry way.

That is a cool pic! Thanks for sharing this cool fact!

Thanks... i never thought I will win 1st prize.. Thanks again for bringing such amazing contest..

Thanks for the fun fact! I know there are a number of frogs that more or less go dormant, but I wasn't aware of this one. That picture really adds to it ;)

Turritopsis dohrnii is the only organism on our planet that is immortal. It is a species of small, biologically immortal jellyfish found in the Mediterranean Sea and in the waters of Japan. It is one of the few known cases of animals capable of reverting completely to a sexually immature, colonial stage after having reached sexual maturity as a solitary individual.

Didn't expect it to win second prize lol! Thanks!

Weird. The ocean is a scary place, with lots of oddities in it. Thanks for sharing!

Great, just what we need, immortal jellyfish to sting people for all eternity... Still, very neat fact and one I certainly had never heard before. Thanks for sharing!

Alright, I'm a bit late to the party, but I'll toss one out there anyway.

Did you know that during Prohibition, there was actually one Scotch Whiskey that LEGALLY prospered?

Laphroaig (pronounced "la-Froyg") is an Islay (pronounced "I-la") Scotch known for it's extremely bold smokey and peaty flavor. This is the kind of drink that people either love or hate.

At any rate, it gains this briny, smokey, peaty flavor from the peat that they burn to malt the barley (basically stopping the germination process).

The peat is soaked in seawater and gradually gains a higher concentration of iodine. When it is then burned to malt the barley, the flavors of the smoke, peat, iodine, and brine get absorbed into the barley. These flavors then become the primary and most well known characteristic of Laphroaig (imagine drinking a campfire).

During prohibition, apparently the smell of this Scotch Wiskey was enough like iodine to convince officials that it was medicinal, as certainly no one could be importing such a spirit just for enjoyment.

Thus it was sold as a medicinal spirit by doctors and pharmacies, allowing it to grow and prosper while most other spirits and other forms of alcohol were relegated to the black market and bootleggers.

I hope you enjoyed this random fun fact!

That is a really neat fun fact. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks! I hope you are feeling better!

Achain has a hard fork!
They will credit every Achain holder with
1:1 ABTC Tokens
1 ACT is $1.17 and one ABTC $33
I strongly believe that not too many people know!
Check my las 2 articles!

Which exchange is that going to be on?

ACT is on Kucoin and OKEx I believe. I would recommend Kucoin, easy to get into (OKEx is tough if you are in the United States). I believe it forks on the 12th, so tomorrow. Pick it up now while everything dipped ;) Here's a link below:

(If you don't want to use my referral, by all means don't worry about it, but I figured I'd shamelessly leave it there in case you decided to open an account up anyway :P )

Did you know if you cut starfish into pieces, every piece will become another starfish? And when they are threatend they will sacrifice an arm that's being grabbed or use it as a distraction to try and escape from predators... Starish's are amazing dude...

Got something to add, they've got no Brains too.

Yea they don't have brain but they have network of nerves that reacts to sourroundings.

I actually was aware of the regenerative capabilities of starfish! The ocean holds some pretty amazing stuff, starfish being just on of many many amazing things! Thanks for your entry!

We haven't explored the oceans yet we seek alien contact XD

lol...i am just realising this.

Every day another lesson to be learned :)

Do you know about the Pinnochio's Paradox?

Source

Lol this is the second paradox I am submitting for this contest. That's because I kinda like these stuffs.

Ok back to Pinocchio. Y’all probably know who Pinnochio is.

If you don't, Pinocchio is a fictional character and the protagonist of the children's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Italian writer Carlo Collodi. Wikipedia

The speciality of this character is that, for every lie he tells his nose grow out a little bit.

So where's the paradox in this?

Matters will get complex if says this statement : "My nose will grow now!"

Let's analyse, if he says the statement and if his nose grows then it would mean that he isn't lying. But if he isn't lying then his nose won't grow!

That's Pinnochio's Paradox.

I have contemplated this exact thing many times. It is actually for that reason that "Pinocchio" was one of my LEAST favorite Disney movies growing up. We had a HUGE collection of Disney VHS. That and the fact that he is downright STUPID! And a really bad child. And kids turning into donkeys? That's a bit out there, even for Disney...

That part always freaked me out as a kid. There was a short stretch there, where I thought if I was bad enough and ever smoked or drank (though I didn't know what they were drinking at the time), I would turn into a donkey just like them, lol.

Did you know that unicorns are real? They're just fat and call themselves rhinos.

That's almost clever, but that rhino there has two horns. Would that be a "bicorn"?

Hahaha yeah! And if it's a male one, his name can be "threecorn" heh, if you understand

Following the formula, it would go uni, bi, the tri. The males would be "tricorn". LOL

yeah, you are right xD

Did you know that the word ‘Set’ has the most definitions of all the words in English Language? reference
I guess you didn't know... lol.

That is pretty interesting, and I actually didn't know that one. Thanks for sharing!

Did you know that
1 gram Protein contains = 4 calories
1 gram Carbohydrate contains = 4 calories
1 gram of Fat contains = 9 calories
so fat contain 225% more calories than protein/carboyhydrate

Can't I just eat my cookies and candy and cake and junk and stuff?

Did you know the color of Facebook is blue because Mark Zuckerberg is color-blind.
