Freud and the Oedipus Complex /part 3/

in #godflesh6 years ago (edited)

The Oedipus complex, this is an unconscious idea that expresses sexuality, or if you want love (I think we've already seen that with respect to Freud's teachings about libido it's the same) the child's desire for the parent of the opposite sex and his hostility to the parent of the same sex. The complex is between 3 and 5 years old. Its decline, its resolution is a sign of entering the latency period, and its complete solution after puberty is concretized with the new type of choice of a love object. Freud considers from the beginning the Oedipus complex of the boy and the girl of symmetry, each having gentle feelings about the parent of the opposite sex and hostile feelings about the same-sex parent.

But experience makes him realize first of all that these feelings are never strictly separated, they are never alone: gentle feelings are always duplicated, doubled by hostile feelings, and vice versa. This duality, ambivalence, ambiguity of our feelings is especially related to the bisexuality of every person. So the boy, of course, does not only feel hatred for the father, which is not without serious problems, because he feminizes, makes his position feminine and puts him as a rival not only for the father but also for the mother. Not accidentally, as we shall see in a moment, it is the castration complex that represents the outcome of Oedipus for the boy. And in order to be all right in his psychic, sexual, love life - he will have to give up his primary choice of subject (mother) under the influence of the father's law. Even more complicated is the question of the girl's Oedipus complex. It is different, not just back-symmetrical to that of the boy. In the girl, as with the boy, the first choice of the object is also the mother. But the absence of a penis in the mother causes the girl to turn to the father who is not without it and who, she believes unconsciously in this, can give it to her and thus fill her lack. The father is the promise of a child equal to the girl of the phallus. This leads to particular difficulties in resolving Oedipus in the girl, and in a moment we also return to this question with the problem of envy to the penis.

The Oedipus complex crystallizes one of the main issues for each person: the relationship of each with his sexuality, but also with his roots, the secret of his birth and origin with his family and historical genealogy, but also with his particular individual becoming and loving life . At the heart of the Oedipus Complex, its focal point is the question of the father. This question - what is a father? is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most difficult issues of the whole psychoanalysis. The real father is always uncertain. The biological connection of the child with the mother is quite obvious, whereas the relationship with the father is based solely on the institutions, on the culture. Paternity is primarily a function. First, this is a function of separation: through it the child learns the prohibition of incest, of incest with the mother. This feature allows the child not to be completely swallowed by the mother, to separate from her, to start her own mental life.
