Stony Creek Poppy Jasper

in #geology6 years ago (edited)

This beautiful gemstone is a type of Orbicular Jasper called Stony Creek Poppy Jasper. The name is kind of missleading because I've never personally found any nice material in the creek itself. The nearby Black Butte Reservoir (in California) is my favorite spot to look. Lake hunting is best when the levels are being lowered due to heavy rains. They usually let water out in preparation for a storm. I just happened to get lucky but you can prepare for such things. This is the opposite side of the same rock , natural and uncut. The first picure is the side I've cut a few slices off with a diamond saw. As you can see it's hard to see how beautiful it will be inside. Bringing a spray bottle can help you determine which rocks will look nice inside. Some extra water can also helpful to wash some off the mud and dirt off, as well. My truck has been acting a bit funny lately, but hopefully I'll be able to get it fixed, and get back to the lake soon. It's been a couple months and I'm itching to go. Here's another promising piece that I need to cut into. The orb's are pretty small, but the colors are very interesting. I'll show some jewelry that I have made from this gemstone in a future blog. So give me a #follow if you haven't already. Please #upvote and resteem as well. Here is a link to my online store.

Beautiful rock! I love the spots on it! I am pretty sure you posted a piece of jewelry you made out of the slices you cut off. Am I right? Either way, beautiful! I sometimes find rocks like the poppy jasper. I take them as an agate, or sometimes they just look like hardened clay with veins of quarts. I'll have to see if I can find the ones I've kept and re-examine them!

Not really sure now lol. I may have posted one of the pendants I made but I need to steal pictures off my Instagram page of this other one I made. It was a custom order so it was a bit different than my usual style. There's different types of orbicular jasper found all over the world so I wouldn't be supprised if you've found some. Wish we had some really nice banded agate in California. I've found a couple that where like crazy lace agate, but nothing like the translucent type you find.

Wow what a nice rock! Awesome find and I know
the area :-)) Ever go around to the back side there
to the south then west across a little bridge and
down a washboard dusty road for a few miles? lol
Some good spots at the end of that road there
is a little creek, nice area to spend the day.

That's actually one of my favourite spots to go. I wish I could search the private side of that creek. I found this at the campground, but down in the lake. Maybe I'll run into you one day down there. Almost every time I go to that spot I see a little red subaru, be random if that was you. Lol I drive an old Silverado...

Oh oh little red subaru getting all the good ones? lol
Wish I was still down there, but we are in Alaska
now. All the agates and other stones in my last
pictures of rocks was from the beaches up here.
Will be posting some more soon on the others
I've found in California, I know of some cool spots
from long ago. Ever go to the back side of a big
rock of pillow lava along hwy 101 south of Ukiah?
We did see the lakes there about empty of water
four years or so ago.
Did ya see a big silver van around 2013-2015? lol

Never been to the backside of the rock. Just hunted the Russian River on the front side of it. Some great green chalcedony that looks like jade near there. Love the rock shop right there, stopped there a million times since I was a kid. I grew up in Santa Rosa so I spent a lot of time on the River around that area.

Mountain house road out of Hopland,
it heads south west to hwy 128, nice drive.
About half way along the road is some pullouts.
Years ago it was a good place to hunt rocks
that had a lot of crystals coating them.
I got a few green stones need names, one from
that area behind Squaw Rock, I think they
renamed that rock recently.
It is light green with a layer of white
sandwiched in between, like a rock cookie, its
not schist or serpentine.
Another is a chunk of what looks like jade out
of Sulphur creek.
Spent many hours looking for agates at goat rock
beach, south side is the best :-))
Rock on lol

Russian Gulch, just north of Jenner is a good spot too. I love Goat Rock. We used to have keg parties every full moon out there in high school. They put that gate in to keep everyone out at night. Lol the south side was always the best... Up by squaw rock I would fine this green Actinolite. When you break it, it has these fiberous crystals. I'll try to get pictures of some of it. Neat stuff

Goat rock was our fav forsure, tho I don't totally
remember a gate, how rude lol
Never made it down around Russian gulch.
Some them green fibers could be asbestous?
Oh and I really loved that little rock shop there on
101, stopped in many times and got some tectites!
I bet we crossed paths somewhere over the years
looking for rocks lol

Don't remember the van lol...

You got a follower :)

Awesome thanks for the follow. Hope you enjoy😉

This is amazing! I looked at some of your other posts...and love them as well! I will be following you to see all of your new posts. I hunt for rocks too...all in Michigan so far...one of my favorite ways to relax.

Thanks for the follow. It sure is a relaxing pastime. I love the thrill of the hunt, you never know what you may find. Hope you find some great stuff this spring after the snow melts.

My son and I have already gone out a couple of times this year when we had some warmer weather. We take those days when we can get them because it doesn't happen very often at this time of year!

I've lived in California my whole life so it's hard for me to even fathom how cold it gets in different parts of the country. When I visited my brother in Alaska the hottest it got was 42 in early May. Lol the sad part was everyone was exited and said I brought the good weather from Cali. Look forward to seeing what you guy's find. One day I want to get an R.V. and take my buisness on the road, and rockhound the nation along the way.
