Street photography: small gardens and small houses, สวนและบ้านเล็กในซอย

After my visit to Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn in my last post), I had a walk along the small lanes in the area near the temple.

This part of Bangkok is very old part of the first capital by the Chao Phraya River. The people who live in this area are usually descendants of the old time villagers who had been living here about two hundred years ago. Although the houses have become more like town houses instead of the old thatched roof houses with large gardens, these people still have the sense of village community. They all know each other’s families and relatives.

Walking along these small houses brought me back to my grandparents’ house in the old part of Bangkok near the railway station. I remember that everyone in the area knew each other as if they were living in a small village. I could just pick some sweets from the local shop without paying and ran back home. The shop owner would be telling my grandmother in the afternoon about my shopping at his shop. This feeling of belonging to a common village and neighborhood could hardly be found in central Bangkok nowadays.

These local people try to have greenery and as many small pot plants as the space would allow them. Some small pot plants could be seen jamming into corners and hanging pot plants become an option for those without any space for pot plants. The ways some owners paint their front gates also tell me that they would love the chance to beautify their dwellings but they just don’t have the space. These are simple people whose sense of identity is very different from those people on the east side of the River. They think that they are people of the old city of Thonburi with deep allegiance to King Taksin. Some still think that the throne had been taken away from King Taksin by those old aristocratic families from Ayutthaya (the old capital which had been ransacked by Burmese invasion). King Taksin was not from aristocratic background but having Thai-Chinese background. That chapter of Thai history is still full of secret stories and speculation on what really happened to King Taksin.

I have got two friends who could trace their family trees and bloodline all the way to King Taksin. However, being Buddhists we tend to let go of the past and get on with the present. The feeling of walking along these small lanes brought me back to another reality where the old King Taksin and his entourage had once walked along these lanes!

หลังจากที่เราไปไหว้พระและเดินเล่นถ่ายรูปที่วัดอรุณแล้ว เราไปเดินเล่นตามซอยเล็กๆที่อยู่หลังวัด ที่นั่นเป็นชุมชนของคนฝั่งธน ที่อยู่กันมาช้านานตั้งแต่ สมัยปู่ย่าตายายและคนส่วนใหญ่เป็นลูกหลานเหลนของคนที่เคยเป็นชาวสวนมาร้อยกว่าปี สมัยก่อนที่นี่เป็นที่สวนและบ้านเรือนเป็นแบบไทยโบราณ คนรุ่นใหม่แถวนี้ก็ยังมีความคุ้นเคยรู้จักกันทุกบ้าน ราวกับว่าความเป็นหมู่บ้านเดียวกันยังคงสืบต่อมา เราเดินไปก็เหมือนได้ย้อนยุคย้อนเวลากลับไปในอดีต เราสังเกตการใช้ชีวิตของคนที่นี่ เขามีความเรียบง่ายมากกว่าคนกรุงเทพฯ

ส่วนหนึ่งอาจจะเป็นเพราะว่า คนฝั่งธน มีความรักนับถือพระเจ้ากรุงธนอย่างเหนียวแน่น หลายคนยังเชื่อว่าพระเจ้าตากสินถูกยึดอำนาจโดยกลุ่มขุนนางเก่าสายอยุธยาที่เสียอำนาจจากการเสียกรุงเก่าแก่พม่า ประวัติศาสตร์ไทยในช่วงนี้เต็มไปด้วยเรื่องราวที่เป็นปริศนาและลึกลับ เรามีเพื่อนสองคนที่สามารถสืบสาวตระกูลและสายเลือดได้ถึงพระเจ้ากรุงธนทีเดียว เราเดินเล่นไปก็หวนระลึกถึงอดีตของที่นี่ ที่แถวนี้เคยเป็นทางที่พระเจ้าตากสิน และเหล่าขุนนางเคยผ่านไปมาประจำ

คนแถวนี้มีความเป็นศิลปินสูงมาก เขาพยายามทำสวน และปลูกต้นไม้ให้บ้านดูน่าอยู่ จะเห็นกระถางต้นไม้หลากหลาย บ้านไหนไม่มีที่วางกระถางก็แขวนกระถางต้นไม้หน้าบ้าน บางบ้านทาสีประตูบ้านได้สวยมากจนเราแปลกใจ เราเดินเล่นอย่างสบายใจราวกับว่าเคยเดินในสถานที่นี้มาในอดีตชาติ
