Ragtag Garden, Part 39

in #gardening7 years ago

Fall has arrived in full force and we're getting the low nighttime temps to prove it.

We've had lows in the mid-thirties for the past week and we might see the first freeze tonight.

Freeze Warning
Issued: 11:49 AM EDT Oct. 28, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Freeze warning remains in effect from 11 PM CDT /midnight EDT/
this evening to 9 am CDT /10 am EDT/ Sunday...

  • temperature... temperatures will drop to the upper 20s to lower
30s Saturday night, away from the urban heat island affected
areas of the Chicago Metro. Lowest temperatures will be west
    of the Fox River valley.

  • Impacts... any sensitive vegetation left outdoors will likely
be killed as temperatures drop below freezing.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or
highly likely. These conditions will kill crops and other
sensitive vegetation.***

I'm expecting everything except my radishes to be dead in the next few days. In light of the forecast, I checked on the progress of radishes.

The lid was still in place even though we've had gusty winds off and on all day. I've been keeping the lid on, but turned sideways, to allow for some heat retention overnight and to protect the bin from some of the heavy rains we've had. It also allows for the greens to clear the top rim on the ends and not be crushed under the lid. It's working well, because I was able to pick the first four radishes from my first ever attempt at a fall crop.

One of them had a couple splits, so I included that one in the harvest. Besides, it will make more room for the one that was next to it.

I washed them up nice and pretty! Considering they came from a really old packet of seed-tape, I'm impressed with how many sprouted. I'm stunned that it looks like most of them will actually make it to maturity!

Fingers crossed the rest will soon be following along behind these. It would be awesome to be picking fresh veggies in November!

Interesting bucket garden!!!

What will you do with all of those radishes? Can you preserve them?

Thanks! We'll probably just eat them. I've never tried to preserve them. Now you've got me wondering if and/or how to do that. They do keep a long time in the crisper drawer of the fridge, so that's a plus. ;~D

I hope you're still able to pick some in November too. It's gotten cold here fast. :(

Fingers crossed and a few days to go... sooooo close!

Wool socks and flannel jammies weather. Stay toasty!

Lovin' your scorecard of container picture!!
Yeah, we're in the same 'freeze boat" as you here. Brrrr!
Going to spend time over winter figuring out containers for next year.

Thanks! It was helpful to see the progress (or lack thereof) happen over the season - sort of a yardstick. Funny thing is the zucchinis turned into radishes... [grin]

I'm in the same boat for planning next year's goodies. This year was totally slap-dash and hope.

Don't you just love the planning??!!!
I'm like a kid in the candy store!

@originalworks

Planning is going to be fun this year - trying to balance what's already in place while trying to expand as well. The kid in a candy store is a good description!

Ohhh nice I love a fresh radish :)

Me, too! Crisp and juicy... thin slices w just a wee bit of salt. Mmmmm!

Think I will try and grow a pot next year. They give me awful heartburn but I like them too much. Lol

I think you'd have great success with them. They love this cool weather and the damp doesn't seem to faze them. You could probably get a few harvests over the season. The heartburn is worth it. ;~D

Sounds just right for our weather. Used to eat them with pea pods as sweets :)

Oooh, yeah, that's a good combo. The 'crunch; is half the fun, too. Your weather will indeed be a plus for the radishes. It's nice that they don't need much room to grow. Perfect for your space!

Perfect for my tum, I can eat them as they grow lol

Love radishes. My dad use to cut the tops and root off the bottom, put them in a jar of water in the fridge. They were really good! So glad you get to do a bit of fall gardening!
It's going to be down to 37 degrees tomorrow nite. That's brrrr kind of weather here😉🐓

Yup - I vividly remember the glass of radishes in the fridge. It usually had a companion glass of carrot and celery sticks next to it. Good 'grab on the go' snacks!

Time for you to find your wool socks, I think....

Looks like there are still a few posting hiccups to be resolved. Sorry for the duplicate...
