Marvel vs Capcom Infinite preview

The heroes of the Marvel Universe join forces with the heroes of the Capcom Universe to stop the evil Ultron Sigma from destroying their world

The Demo

Capcom has released a demo of their upcoming game "Marvel vs Capcom Infinite" scheduled for release September 19.
In this demo you get acquainted with some of the characters and the gameplay. Only the Story mode is available on the PS4 demo but it is enough to give you a taste of what the game will be like.

Two worlds collide

DC has had a lot of success with mixing up Universes in Injustice. Marvel vs Capcom Infinite seems to want to accomplish the same thing. This game will probably remind you a lot of Injustice (just without the evil characters).
It is not the first time that characters from the Marvel and Capcom Universes have met, there have been a number of Marvel vs Capcom fighting games in the past.

But this time the whole affair seems bigger and better. The mixing up of characters from both the Marvel and Capcom Universe is very well done. After a while you tend to forget that these characters are not from the same universe. The way they are introduced is like theyhave known each other for quite some time and have been fighting side to side forever.

The characters

In this short demo we meet an impressive roster of characters (not all are playable).

From the Marvel Universe

• Ultron (bonded with Sigma, the bad guy from Mega Man X)
  The maniacal Robot who has "no strings",

• Dr. Strange
  The mystical wizard who recently had his own movie

• Captain America
  The red-white and blue Avenger. Famous for his own movies and also leader of the Avengers (in the Avengers movie)

• Captain Marvel
  A well known character if you read Comic books, Captain Marvel is a very strong superhero with a very long history. I think this version of Captain Marvel is Carol Danvers. There is talk about a Captain Marvel movie so we will hear about this character more in the future.

• Rocket
  Props for Capcom for including the "Guardians of the Galaxy" gun totin', wise crackin' raccoon.

• Thor
  The Norse God from the Avengers with the hammer that only he can lift

• Hawkeye
  The sharp shooting archer from the Avengers

• Iron Man
  The character that started it all for the Marvel movies. Iron man in the game sounded exactly like Robert Downey Jr. , asking Sir Arthur (from ghost-n-goblins) if he was compensating for something with his enormous lance.

• Thanos
  The big bad boy in the Marvel Universe at the moment because of the upcoming Infinity Gauntlet/Stones Movie.

My personal favorite Marvel bad boy is Apocalypse, but FOX just had to frag that one up.

From the Capcom Universe

• Strider
  From the game with the same name. A cyber ninja with a sword who can jump like it's nobodies business.

• Mega man
  Mega man needs no introduction or explanation. If you don't know who this character is, stop reading this blog now and go play one of his games. They are called Megaman.

• Sir Arthur
  The lead character from the ghosts 'n goblins game, one of the hardest game around.

• Dante
  Lead character from the Devil may Cry series. A badass with 2 guns and a sword who likes to combo shooting and slicing baddies just because he can.

• Spencer
  From the Bionic Commando games. A tough dude with a bionic arm.

• Chris Redfield
  The zombie slayer from the Resident Evil Series.

• Chun Li
  The Chinese female fighter from the Street Fighter Series. Watch out for her Spinning bird Kick.

First Impressions

This is Capcom we're talking about so gameplay is rock solid. The game starts with some cut scenes that explain the story. After each cut scene you get to control a Marvel and Capcom character and have to defeat baddies in a 2D fighting game setup. The fighting is fast 'n furious. 4 buttons are used for punches and kicks and the shoulder buttons are used for switching characters and special moves like using an infinity stone.
Nothing complicated here, just beat your opponents using punches, kicks and special moves.

The graphics are beautiful and well detailed. The style of the game compliments both Game and Comic book (or should I say Movie) characters. Movement of the characters is smooth and the moves are easy to execute.

The soundtrack is good, although something more "grander" would have been better. The game seems to lean more towards the recent Marvel Movies than the Comic book iterations so a soundtrack mimicking that would have been a better choice (in my opinion).

The good

I really enjoyed the demo, although it was short. Each introduction of a character was moment of joy because for me this is a coming together of two things I love, comic books and games. It shows that both Marvel and Capcom put a lot of effort into this game.

The not so good

I have one complaint though. With all the resources that both Marvel and Capcom have at their disposal, all the characters that they own, why (why, oh why) would they choose to have you fight generic baddies?
Marvel has some of the "best" bad guys around, so why do we have to fight Ultron bots and the same looking brainwashed Asgardians?

I hope in the final game that things are different but for me this was a major turn off. Where are the Capcom bad guys and more important where are the Marvel bad boys? Sabretooth, Mr. Sinister, Apocalypse, Venom, Scorpion, Bullseye, Juggernaut, Green Goblin the list goes on and on.
I think this is a missed opportunity for this game, If they had added some minor super villains and some more major league villains than this game would have been even better.
