Retro NES Game Review: Double Dragon 3
With the extra free time today I had the opportunity to play a old NES game called Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones. Hmm or is it "The Rosetta Stone" ? well this mostly depends in what part of the world you are situated in, but it's basically the same game.

The first thing I noticed about this game was the title screen and it's great music, this is normally already a good sign of something good. You can hang around on the tittle screen all you like the music seems to continue endlessly and there are no preview demos to interrupt it. Starting the game there are basically no "options menu", however there are 3 things you can do. Firstly you can start a single player game, the other option is to play the same game in multiplayer, or they have a 3rd option where you can play the entire game where you can actually cause damage to your friend. This can either be on purpose or accidentally, essentially this can create 2 game modes. Firstly let's be honest it's a more difficult version of the multiplayer, or you can use this to battle your friend in a kind of VS mode on the first screen.

So it's decent in giving you at least a few things you can do. But before we continue I would like to mention where I stand with the past Double Dragon games. For the first game it was kind of fun but it didn't have enough to save it from being binned. For the 2nd game it brought in the needed fun and variety, the story was a little darker than usual and I think it generally played better. The pick-up weapons played a bigger part of the action, it was very challenging no doubt but more fair compared to the first game.
So moving on to Double Dragon 3 and picking the single player mode we thankfully first have some story to get through.

The story continues 1 year after the events of the previous game and Marion the girlfriend of the main character that we control has completely vanished, yup yet again. Strangely a old lady "and might I add scary lady" called Hiruko appears, she's a friend to inform our hero that she heard of the Marion disappearance. The old lady Hiruko claims that in order to have Marion returned safely that the enemies request the sacred power stones. Which we must travel around the world to acquire and bring to them. I must say that right from the start I don't trust Hiruko, she is either working for the bad guys or wants the stones for herself, maybe the stones would turn her young again or something but I could be wrong.

So starting the game what is Double Dragon 3? Well if you played the previous Double Dragon games it's more of the same, but it's basically what I would describe as a side scrolling 2D fighting game. There are a decent amount of moves here that can be expected from a NES game. You can punch, kick, jump, jump kick, whirlwind jump kick, put enemies into a head lock and even back throw them.
But like many and previous games of this nature the controls can be difficult. This problem is one of the biggest downfalls of this game and others like it. The game also does a poor job of easing you in, soon as you start the game enemies are thrown at you, you must either defeat them or die. And if you think it's going to get any easier after that "very first screen" or have something explained to you soon.. nope nothing. And that is probably the biggest problem with this game, not the lack of instructions but it's difficulty. Soon as you get to the next screen enemies will be coming in fast and taking you down real quick if you don't know what your doing. And this is incredibly unfair, I can only imagine the disappointment of many kids receiving this game. Being stuck on the first two screens of a game is going to frustrate many. To make things even worse the game gives you only "one life" to beat the whole dam thing or face starting from the very beginning.

So there are definitely a lot of things they could of done to make this game better, strangely they could of applied more of what they had in Double Dragon 2. It's often been said that Double Dragon 2 was the peak of the series on the NES, and yes playing Double Dragon 3 I can see why. Shame really because the graphics are nice, still I prefer Double Dragon 2 graphics over the third instalment, but the music here is also ok.
It's a shame really this game and others similar to it suffer from what I feel is the same problem, there are enough moves and options here to enjoy the game, but sadly if you want to progress in the game your mostly best sticking to using one single move and nothing else or risk death, and I feel this ruins it's potential and experience. You can also try and use walls to your advantage, this is because the enemies mostly always have the same annoying strategy of trying to hit you from both side, and like this you will very quickly die. And so being close to a wall can help prevent this from happening so easily. What I do like is the continued use of pick-up weapons but they used to be more fun in other versions and games so again this is a real shame.

However in this third instalment you do get to play as other characters once you beat them. They are reasonably well balanced, like you get a character later who is much slower than the rest but take note he's punches are also so much stronger. It seems many players think this particular slow character is useless but that's not actually the case. There is another character later but I won't spoil things any further. But I do want to mention that by switching between them "I guess we could say" that it's almost like having a extra life. Amazingly you don't get a single extra life in this name, not even a heal, well you do thankfully start each new level with a full health bar, but it's just not enough. And so in this state it seems this game will be landing in the bin, if you like a Double Dragon game I would say stick with or get the 2nd game in the series. Hope you all have a good day or night and I will hopefully see you on the next Steemit post.
