South Park: The Fractured but Whole Review - A prosecution proceeding

South Park: The Stick of Truth surprised many gamers by being a good and well-behaved game. It was therefore expected that the game would be a sequel. Obsidian Entertainment has taken leave of the franchise and passed the stick of truth to Ubisoft. It was now up to them to make a worthy follow-up, and they were extremely successful.

South Park: The Fractured but Whole is a direct sequel to The Stick of Truth. The story is completely about finding a cat called Scrambles. The Coon (Cartman's alter ego) finds this important enough to stop the war of the first game and to summon his superiors. What follows is an adventure that unfolds naturally in rapid pace. Major missions are often missed in side missions, and you can expect future short stories in these stories. Scenes run smoothly and do not end regularly how you expected them to end. Despite this high pace, the game is packed with content. Expect to insert more time than in The Stick of Truth.

The further you get into the story, the more you learn about yourself. Personal identification is a widely discussed topic today and the writers of the game have made every effort to give your gender, sexual preference, race and ethnicity an important role in the story. You can decide what you identify with yourself. There is therefore a chance that you will run into a game like a gender-flowing, pan-sexual, Caucasian Mexican.

Social media also play an important role. Your superhero status is based on the number of followers on 'Coon Chart'. You increase this number of followers by taking a selfie with other characters. Some, however, only want to see you in the picture when you reach a certain number of followers, where others only do this when you've helped them with something. As a member of the superhero team, 'Coon & Friends', you're never happy to be alone. The further you get into the game, the more teammates you play freely. This is done through clever missions that are generally based on clichés from well-known superhero films. The combat system has been completely redirected. Everything is still turn-based, but it is now also possible to move around the battlefield. This makes every battle more dynamic and you can apply more tactics. Fighting is almost never boring because you can always choose to use other teammates or adjust your own strengths.

You have to choose a particular class at the beginning of the game. When you have chosen one that you do not like, you can always switch happily. As the story progresses you get the opportunity to add an additional class and combine forces. This keeps the gameplay fresh throughout the game. Whether you prefer to face everyone, attack a distance with fireballs or make your teammates stronger; There is always a playstyle that suits you. There is surprisingly much depth in the rpg elements. You have a choice of different classes and even get control over your statistics and skills in the form of Artifacts and Hero DNA. It's a simple but sensible addition. Every Artifact is unique and disguised as a hilarious object. You can find them anywhere in the world or create yourself with the new Crafting system. This system also uses you to create new outfits and medicines.

Discover a world of secrets

The small town of South Park has been remodeled in detail. Loyal fans of the television series can undoubtedly find some easter eggs in every room. All inhabitants behave exactly as it should. It's Ubisoft, like Obsidian Entertainment previously with The Stick of Truth, managed to build an authentic world. This world is also filled with secrets. Everywhere, cabinets, drawers and bags are filled with special items and costumes. Sometimes you even have to solve complete puzzles using one of your superiors to come to a particular box. Your arsenal of naval forces is also expanded. For example, with the help of Morgan Freeman, you learn to use your flatulence to manipulate time.

Still, everything is not perfect for the playing world. For example, you'll see a few seconds of a load screen when traveling from area to area. It's something small and it does not directly impact your playing experience, but it does not feel unnecessary. After all, it's not the case that every time an enormous area has to be loaded. Many of the puzzles and fights are often just too simple. To solve some riddles, you need help from one of your supervisors, but one that you need is always clearly stated. You will never get stuck in The Fractured but Whole. Fortunately, you always have something about all the hidden objects. With dozens of collectors to collect and an extensive crafting system, you have enough reason to discover every corner of South Park,

Ubisoft managed to take and improve the South Park formula: The Stick of Truth where it was needed. The combat system is less static and you finally have more on the many items you can find in the world. South Park: The Fractured but Whole just offers that little bit of extra depth in almost all aspects of the game, wrapped in a bizarre but incredibly funny story. Simply put, it's just a straightforward game that was worth the many delays.

South Park: The Fractured but Whole is exactly what a sequel should be like. Technically speaking, the game has grown tremendously while retaining all known elements from the first game. There is more depth in the rpg elements, the battles are more dynamic and the crafting system gives you more reason to discover the wonderful world of South Park. The story is really funny, although some scenes may not be for everyone. While playing Southpark: The Fractured but Whole is made with much love and may be called the very best South Park episode so far.
