2K Sports hopes to boost the sport genre this year by introducing a real online hub world into NBA 2K18. Unfortunately clarity, microtransactions and sponsorships do not always make this innovation as entertaining.

NBA 2K18 contains everything you've been used to from 2K Sports. The basketball players look lifelike, the stadiums are authentic and the presentation hardly distinguishes the game from contests on television.

The game also improves certain aspects that were less well-known in NBA 2K17. For example, player models look a lot healthier this time. However, these are improvements that are expected again each year. Sports games rarely do anything new. NBA 2K18 contains all modes in 2K17 and everything works excellent again. Play a game of modern or classic teams in Play Now, start a season with full control of a MyGM / MyLeague franchise or collect cards to create your own unique basketball club in MyTeam. Sliced ​​cake, right? Nevertheless, there is certainly renewal this year in the form of MyCareer. A game mode that is not necessarily new, but offers a completely new experience.

You start MyCareer with the creation of your own player. Where this can be done in NBA 2K17 by a face, you need to do it in 2K18 with some presets and different sliders. This gives you a lot less freedom to make a player like two drops of water on you. For the first time, however, it is now possible to scan your face via a smartphone application. Or, at least, that could have been possible if the app worked better. After several attempts, error messages appeared on the screen. Even if the application succeeded, something went missing in the game when data retrieved. However, animations are not always as smooth and, in particular, the eyes of some characters do not always seem to behave as it should. Still, every scene has a certain charm that keeps you watching. 2K has managed to build an interesting world with unique characters and original scenarios.

After three pots of street basketball you will be approached by the team scout that you initially indicated as a favorite. He offers to train once with the opportunity to enter an annual contract. Before you go to your first official training, you will be released in the new hub world of NBA 2K18. This is a street where you and other online players can walk freely around. From here you can train to your apartment, the gym, the hairdresser, the street basketball court, various shops and the sports facility of your team. This innovation feels like a fresh wind, but also as a test. The streets and surrounding buildings are not very detailed and it seems strange to see so many players at one square at the same time. It's difficult to get an overview of where exactly everything is to be found, something that could easily be solved with waypoints. You are immediately confronted with a number of sponsors. It seems like everything is connected to a particular brand and it does not take long for you to get tired of the other advertising pushed in your face.

When you finally realize where your apartment is, you face the biggest problem of NBA 2K18: all costs Virtual Currency (VC). Although it is possible to buy any animation and any item without real money, you do not earn the VC fast enough to regularly purchase what you want. For many items, you must first have certain attributes, to find out that you still have to pay for it. The enjoyment of certain things is then replaced by irritation. Everything is accessible, but often out of reach. NBA 2K18 sometimes feels a bit like the most comprehensive free-to-play game ever - if you forget about the fact that you're paying a lot of money for it.

Before you know, you are part of a professional basketball organization. You really start at the bottom of the ladder. During the training sessions, you notice that star players ignore you before using the ball to suit you, communication experts keep an eye on your use of social media and your gaming minutes during one game can be counted on one hand.
