Nioh Complete Edition (PC) Review - A solid 'port' of a good game and a great starting point for newcomers

Team Ninja, best known for the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series, this year impressed gamers with Nioh for the PlayStation 4 and now PC gamers have the chance to play them through the Complete Edition. Before we dive into this review we have to point out that we mainly discuss the quality of the PC 'sport' and that we have played with a keyboard and mouse as well as with a Steam Controller.

For those who are not familiar with the game: Nioh is the 17th-century Japan, where the players control the Englishman William Adam, who, under the guidance of nina masters , starts his journey to all the spirits and demons that cross his path from to switch. This combination of Dark Souls and Ninja Gaiden themes and game mechanisms focuses on traditional hand-to-hand battles and getting stronger during this journey.

After we have set the resolution (you can go up to 4K, depending on your box) and have chosen a framerate (you can play with 60 frames per second, again if your PC pulls this), we are ready to start. Unfortunately, the user interface reminds us of that on the console, since all menus and in-game notifications use the input from the Steam Controller, even if no controller is connected. What's worse: when we tried to change the buttons to the keyboard, the control configuration menu ran out and we had to restart the game.

The graphics that the game offers are very similar to the game modes that the PS4 Pro version offers: The pre-set Action and Cinematic settings are almost direct copies. In addition, there are also settings for the lowest and highest quality. The graphics are also customizable and allow for changes up to 4K (3840x2160) resolution, 30 or 60 frames per second, selection menus for 'rendering' resolution and shadow quality, as well as check boxes for dynamic reflections, camera 'motion blur' and 'ambient occlusion'. And, of course, you can choose to play without a border in full screen, in a window or window.

Even the user interface gives the impression that there are no keyboards in this world, although the game can be played with. Without a controller, the only option is a preset configuration, where the character is moved with WASD, the camera moves with the peculiar H, U, N, and the semicolon key. Although almost every other action is placed on the letter keys, arrows and each function button - the mouse is completely absent.

However, the Steam Controller is supported as standard and after all madness with the keyboard the controller feels great. The times we went dead also grew much less quickly than before. Controlling the camera with the 'touch pad' feels somewhat strange, but that was mainly a preferred problem. The touchpad itself is not over- or under-sensitive and it is clear that the control has been perfected down to the last detail.

In the end the port is solid, but not without problems. The game did not play at all during our play sessions, apart from the settings menu; the loading times were also quite short. Koei Tecmo's previous ports were top level, so the end result is not a surprise, nor the price of 49.99 euro (which, as a reminder, all previous dlc - Dragon of the North, Defiant Honor and Bloodshed's End and all other free updates contains). Just do not forget to connect a controller.

➕ Contains all dlc; 4K and 60 FPS options; Steam Controller support.

➖ Terrible keyboard support; unclear resolution settings.

Thanks for reading.
