Game Review: Wuppo Review - Special and Varied world

Wuppo is now available for a long time for the PC and was very well received. I have had to wait for some time, but since the end of last week i can finally start on the PlayStation 4 with this nice platformer. Previously i played the game several times and i liked it very well, now that the release on the PlayStation 4 is actually a fact.

Brutal Wum

The game starts in a hotel where many Wums live, these are balls with legs that show a lot of human behavior. By constantly chasing the receptionist, this best man reaches his boiling point and the result is that you are thrown out of the hotel. While you are half knocked out on the ground, some stuff is stolen from you and as soon as you come you realize that you have really messed up. That is actually the moment when your adventure begins and that brings you to many different areas in the Wum world.

What distinguishes the game from the rest is that it can be called unique in several ways. The dialogues that you can provide often offer different options where you adopt a certain attitude in a certain sense. You can respond or respond with kindness, but you can also go into someone else's questions as a cheeky bag. It is just what you like best and what is particularly funny here is that some dialogues are wonderfully dry. It provides enough entertainment during the adventure, because the main character is not an everyday superhero. On the contrary, it is a lumpy, cheeky and lazy Wum and you determine his character to some extent yourself by means of the answers you give.

Special world

Another aspect with which Wuppo distinguishes itself from other games is the use of the visual style. The style is rough, grainy and maybe a bit simple, but if you play for an hour you will really appreciate the style. Moreover, the whole is very colorful, so the world will never get bored. The same also applies to the characters you find along the way. Everyone has their own role in the world and although not everybody is approachable, these characters are also very colorful and we aim at the characteristic. The developer has created a unique world with Wuppo that looks unique, has different varieties and also lacks a history.

Gradually you will learn more and more about what has happened before, you will meet more races and so on. The game is in every respect in terms of content and the same can be said about the gameplay. In the beginning it is very simplistic, but it will continue to unfold as a game with various gameplay possibilities. Besides that you navigate through the world, you will also have to deal with higher platforms, puzzles, blockades and much more. You also regularly come across new objects that you or yourself can use or need to get further into the game.

As a platformer, the game is quite diverse and ensures that you will not get bored easily. Naturally, there is also no lack of bosses and they provide even more variety. Mainly because they are also very varied, which benefits the gaming pleasure. In fact, the game in the base is already good, but that was the same on other platforms. The game was transferred directly to the PlayStation 4 and that's also fine. The steering is of course adjusted and that goes also from a smooth roof. It's only crazy that you have to jump with L1 instead of a cross, but you'll get used to that after fifteen minutes of play.

That could be better

Let me suggest that Wuppo is an excellent platformer with fun characters, a varied world and fun gameplay. In that respect, there is hardly anything to say about the game, but it is not equally well worked out everywhere. It is quite annoying that a level has been divided into multiple screens. The camera moves with your Wum, but at the moment that you are at the end of a section, the image jumps to the next image. Not bad if you just move from left to right or different, but if you have to platform and you do not have a continuous overview of the entire playing field, your reflexes are put to the test.

Changing to the next image takes a fraction of a second, so that can be just the fraction you need to send your Wum in the right direction. It is also a mystery to me why the world is not simply presented fluently as a whole, because at times this can cause some unnecessary frustration. In addition, it is also sometimes unclear what you have to do. At least, you get an explanation of your ultimate goal, but that can ensure that you are wandering endlessly in the level, back-tracking and more until you accidentally run into what you are looking for or where you need to be. Talking with figures helps, but a little more guidance or else a folder would not be out of place.

Conclusion

Wuppo is made by only two men and despite the fact that the team behind the game is small, the game is big. Great in quality, because it brings a unique experience in several ways. Dry humor, nice puns, tasty platform gameplay, varied characters and a beautiful world that is poured together into an entertaining adventure with a nice challenge here and there with various bosses. The port to the PlayStation 4 has been successful, because the game runs like a sun and is fine to control. It is not an everyday game, but a must-have, precisely because of the mentioned points. That the camera system is not optimal is a bit of a shame, but that should not spoil the fun, because for the rest it is excellent.
