Game Demo & Review

in #gaming5 years ago

An indie game that looks quite impressive.

The game is currently named, Curse of the Monarch, but that may change. It is a side-scroller but uses 3D graphics with responsive animations that include shadows generated by the light sources and the objects that block the light, moving mist on the ground and 3D modeled characters and other assets.

I'm useless at these types of games and have yet to get past the first enemy, however I've seen others get close to the end. The game's inspiration comes from Dark Souls and is deliberately made difficult because it is designed for the hard-core gamers. If you pay attention, you will notice that the enemies indicate that they are about to attack by the way they move. That gives you a chance to react. A rather unique game mechanic is that blocking causes your sword to change colour and when it is bright it will inflict extra damage, so simply hacking away at enemies is NOT the way to play this game. Another rather unique feature is that the enemies will jump back to avoid your attacks.

Game play begins in the cellar of a castle, where our main character has just escaped from his cell. He has obviously been there a while because he is just skin and bones and not very well dressed. There is no distracting music track, but rather an ambient sound to go along with the sounds of foot-steps and fighting clashes. A lot of effort went into getting the sounds to be realistic.

Are you good enough to help him escape? You can download the demo here and give it a try yourself. The link takes you to Google drive, where there are 2 files:
The first is a build for the OSX operating system and the second file is for Windows. Download the appropriate file (right-click for the menu and choose the option to download) and then un-zip it to a folder of your choice. To run the game, you will need to open (double-click) the file, Curse of the Monarch.exe.

The first screen has instructions for playing the game. Pressing ESC opens a settings menu. The default quality setting is extremely low quality, so I suggest using the best quality your computer can handle (scroll down for higher quality options than what shows initially in the selections box).

When accessing the settings menu, the game keeps running in the background, and there is no way to pause the game (and that is deliberate so that you can't get extra time to plan your attacks), so you will need to kill off the enemies on-screen before you can take a break. No enemies spawn, so you can relax before moving to the next screen.

If you manage to make it to the end of the demo, you will have the opportunity to leave comments.

The developer is looking for people who can help complete the full game for a share of the profits.

Simplified Delegations to @happyme

Get votes roughly 10 times the value of your delegation. (I can vote twice if you exceed my VP.) Those who play the adventure games and delegate have been getting just over 20X their delegation value beyond what the other players get! I try to give as much as I possibly can, but as more people delegate, I'll need to cut back the VP to accommodate the extra daily votes.
