Starcraft Remastered Review - As Strong As Before

Since its original release in 1998, Starcraft is a legendary title and not just within the RTS genre. Even nearly twenty years later, the multiplayer is still actively playing. Blizzard finds it high time that the game gets a makeover and comes with a remastered version. Or that's what you can read in my Starcraft Remastered review.

In Starcraft Remastered you still follow three different story lines, each from the perspective of one of three factions: Terran, Protoss and Zerg. During the Terror story missions, we learn to know characters that also return to Starcraft II, such as Jim Raynor and of course Sarah Kerrigan. With the Zerg you take over the role of a Zerg Commander, but you do not have much control over your actions, because the Zerg Overmind is always present. Finally, during the Protoss storyline, you take over the role of Artanis, a high officer in the Protoss army.

Starcraft Remastered includes not only the main game, but also the expansion of Brood War . Just like in the main game, you also take three different characters in Brood War under your control, but by far the most interesting is the story line Sarah Kerrigan. The Terran has become queen of the Zerg and has no mercy for her old companions.

Multiplayer as strong as ever before

The strongest point of Starcraft and the reason why it is still playing is of course the multiplayer. The three different races are unchanged and are still balanced to the point, rendering you rewarded or punished in the multiplayer based on your skills. Despite the balance, the factions are completely different, especially the Zerg, and it is always refreshing to get started with another faction. It's a multiplayer at its best.

And to unravel the community with the release of Starcraft Remastered, Blizzard has ensured that players of the original and the remastered version play on the same servers. The matchmaking additionally goes fast and strikingly even faster than in Starcraft II. Also, if you switch from one version to another, just take your stats and position on the ladder. Even the home-made modes and maps of fans are playable in Starcraft Remastered, either with a lick of paint over it.

One-on-one transfer with all its consequences

Because what Starcraft Remastered is essential is a graphical update. And that's sure, not just the enhanced resolution, but everything. The sprites are renewed, the lighting effects are greatly improved, the terrain looks better and everything is obviously sharp.

And if you've always wanted to see all your men from now, that's possible now, because in Starcraft Remastered you can zoom in on your troops. We only recommend it not to be in the midst of a hectic fight, because before you know, you are defeated.

Unfortunately, the one-on-one transfer also means that the weak spots of the original Starcraft are also in Starcraft Remastered. Most of these dots are small things, such as being able to select the right troops if they are in the same place, but the artificial intelligence pathfinding remains a big problem. Once one of your men has to maneuver between different buildings, you sometimes wait too long and in the case of large units, that is almost always the case. It's very frustrating, but when the remastered version does not have that problem, it causes balance problems between the two versions.

Is it worth the price?

You should also wonder if you value the price for a graphical update. Blizzard's price is happily kept low, with a price tag of 15 euros, but it remains a fact that Starcraft and Starcraft: Brood War are meanwhile to be picked up free of charge in Blizzard's digital store. And to keep playing together with your old Starcraft buddies, the new version is also not required.

Starcraft Remastered Review - An old classic in a shiny new jacket

All in all, Starcraft Remastered is a good attempt by Blizzard to make new players acquainted with the classic of old times, while old players may return as a result of the turnout. And because both versions can play together, there are no separate communities. However, it means that the old downs are still there and that the pathfinder is a point of frustration, but with the highly improved graphics and merged servers i take it for granted.

The plus and the drawbacks

✔ Multiplayer as strong as ever before
✔ Both versions play on the same servers
✔ Graphic update looks beautiful
✔ Nothing changed...
✖ ...but that includes old defects
✖ Original games are also available for free

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
