In addition to shooters, racing games, horror games and more for PlayStation VR, the headset is also suitable for a different genre. How about strategy? That is also possible in virtual reality and a game that can be put under that name is Legion Commander. In this game you, as a ruler, are at the helm of an army with fictional creatures to enter the battle. Is this game - made in China - of good quality? We will see.

Lord of The Rings Commander made in China

If you think of a genre as a strategy, virtual reality is not the first thing that comes to mind. Still, it can work fine with PlayStation VR, which proves this game. Legion Commander knows a fairly simple concept, but before we go into that, first something else. We encountered a typical Chinese approach. The style is good and works, but this is mainly due to the imitation of existing styles. We would swear that all orcs we saw in the game came straight from The Lord of the Rings.

The game also contains several armies with which you can play. So you have the people, elves and dwarfs in addition to the orcs. Not really spectacular, but hey, the game knows how to fill in nicely. In the demo we could play, we could only choose from the orcs and they were therefore very familiar. That they seem to come from the Tolkien universe is a bit shameless, but perhaps the game offers originality. Well, once we had chosen the orcs and entered the battlefield, the second game emerged that had a prominent representation in Legion Commander, namely World of Warcraft.

Anyway, we are running ahead of things too quickly. After choosing a faction and before you enter the battlefield, you also get the option to choose different units. In the case of the orcs these units vary from a group of goblins to large balrogs or flying Fellbeasts with the Nazgûl on them. Of course they are not literally called, but with these references you know exactly what the units look like. It shows once again that it has been blatantly copied and that is a bit of a shame. Well, once you've chosen units, it's time to really enter the battlefield and although this preview has a somewhat negative undertone so far, the actual gameplay seems to be fun.

The interface while playing shows a red sphere that represents your health. Around it you will find a blue manabalk and with mana points you can move the units across the field. The ultimate goal is to destroy the army base against you and prevent this from happening to you. There are also a few tickets in front of you and these tickets contain a special move or actually super buffs and attacks, which can help you in battle. Think of an extra shield around your base or getting an Angel from World of Warcraft, a dragon that could be the twin brother of Deathwing and that puts everything on the field in the fire.

Real Time Total not strategic (RTT)

The gameplay is fun and the PlayStation Move controller works really well and very easily. What was also very easy was the demo itself because it could only be played at the lowest difficulty level. That did not really mean much, so we could put one unit after the other on the battlefield with the result that the opponent did not stand a chance. A somewhat strange choice for a demo, because this means that the actual strategic element is a bit lost and it is therefore difficult to determine whether it is really strategically arranged. For now it came down to spamming as many units as possible on the field and defeating the enemy especially with numbers.

In short, stupid power was able to win smartness in this case and that gives a somewhat distorted picture of the intended gameplay. Furthermore, in terms of presentation, the game comes across as a mobile thirteen in a dozen game, but strangely enough the gameplay can be called successful. The idea is excellent and it certainly also offered some fun, despite the low level of difficulty. What we are wondering, however, is why this must necessarily be a PlayStation VR game, because immersion is not the case when you play the game. What is fun is that the dragon flies over you with a lot of fire-spitting as a result, but that was really the only thing so far. There is nothing in the game that can not be played without a VR headset.

Preliminary conclusion

The Lord of the Rings VR experience in a World of Warcraft world that we get served under the name Legion Commander is a fun concept that does not get anything exciting from virtual reality. This one sentence is actually the ultimate summary of what we find so far from the game. We have to admit that despite the early phase of the game, it all works really well. It plays nice way so there is not much wrong with that, but there is an uninspired style (or just, it's just how you look at it), so far strategy-free gameplay and bad graphics that we know from mobile games of a few years back. As far as the gameplay is concerned, we will admit that it is not fair to tackle it so hard, as we were forced to play it easily.
