Dragon Ball FighterZ Preview - Experience an adventure

Arc System Works is no unknown developer. They are responsible for Guilty Gear, BlazBlue and many more beautiful games. Bandai Namco has now deployed this developer to develop Dragon Ball FighterZ, a fighting game that is simply filled in the traditional way. So no 3D environments, but just 2D environments in which the different characters completely separate. Previously we saw the game on the E3.

Wonderful action

What once again proved is the unprecedented pace of this fighter. Because it is traditionally arranged in terms of gameplay, the play space is relatively compact. That is not a bad thing, because that promotes the pace in the pots properly. Performing the ordinary attacks goes at a relatively high pace, but the more complicated combos can not be too complicated. You get both horizontal space and vertical space where you have enough space within the framework to make life difficult for the opponent. That may be a step back compared to previous games, but you should not lie on that too long.

Arc System Works knows exactly what it is doing and that is to provide you with the means to fight battles in a smooth yet quick way. The action really splashes off the screen, because it is so incredibly colorful. That is not in the first place a pleasant aspect, also the very stable framerate and the high resolution make it a pleasant whole to look at. The speed, the use of color, the combos, everything looks spectacular and that will absolutely please the fans. In fact, it is one of the more impressive fighting games of the moment. In addition, the game has a not too high entry threshold, so that newcomers can venture here.

Experience an adventure

The focus of Dragon Ball FighterZ is of course mainly on the individual fights and the multiplayer. In fact, it can be a very interesting e-sports game, which is also very cool to watch from the sidelines. However, we must not forget that the game also simply contains a single player mode that is not mounted on the car as a fifth wheel. We could play the single player without any context, because Bandai Namco did not want to spoil anything. So we can not tell you much about the story, because we started working in chapter four. Nevertheless, we did get an impression of the structure.

The single player has been entered per chapter by means of a sort of overview in which you go from fight to fight. At the start of a chapter, however, you can not randomly click on a fight, because it is to a certain extent linear. The reason for this is of course that it must fit within the story of the game, so that battles are finished in a chronological order. The battles themselves are of course what you expect from the game, but they have chosen a cool way to tell the story to you. Namely exactly the way you are used to from the TV series, so with high-quality cut scenes and that in style.

That is absolute enjoyment, because it only benefits the atmosphere and if you consider that you do not have one but even three storylines, you will also be able to spend a lot of time on this. The action during the battles in the single player is just as spectacular as in the multiplayer, albeit a bit slower. That is incidentally - in our opinion - more due to the difficulty, because that was in the version that we played on extremely easy. That is a little awkward, because it gives a distorted picture of the actual challenge, because opponents did not do too much now. Nonetheless, that will undoubtedly be adaptable in the release version and then you are really waiting for a beautiful adventure.

High pick-up-and-play content

Dragon Ball FighterZ has the typical 'easy to learn, hard to master' concept when it comes to gameplay. When you take control of the controller for the first time and you dive into a match, you can shake off several nice moves without much difficulty. This can be done on the one hand by simply bashing, but if you put more energy into it you will discover that the basic moves are all logically arranged and, even more importantly, easy to implement. This allows everyone to get started with the game, but the best part is of course to learn the really complicated combos so you can work in a spectacular way.

The gameplay does indeed have some depth and although combos are never too complicated, you will have to practice before it is all really in you. Once you have mastered it, fighting will really enjoy it. We have witnessed a high-level fight, with one spectacular move following the other and because the game has a 3 versus 3 set-up, this yields a lot more variation in the gameplay. In addition, the jars last a little longer than usual and if you have mastered everything well, then you can enjoy yourself. Not only because it plays great, also because the graphics are hair- and sharp and that against a very smooth framerate.

Preliminary conclusion

Dragon Ball FighterZ will be released at the end of January 2018 and we can not wait. Arc System Works delivers with this game an excellent fighter that seems technically very well put together. The action is smooth and the game has a relatively low entry threshold, but with a lot of depth in the moves and combos. The single player seems to be a mecca for fans of the series, albeit on the easy side, but that will undoubtedly be adaptable. Apart from that, the game offers several other modes, so players will not get bored easily. It is still too premature to make a final value judgment, but this can sometimes become the ultimate Dragon Ball fighter. We'll know more in a month.
