The Best Of E3 2018 - Part One

It is that time of the year again, E3 and for those of you a bit unfamiliar with what exactly that is, the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

This is basically the gamers version of the Comic-Con, all the top game companies from around the world showcase their best and brightest new titles which they will be releasing soon. This year marks the 24th E3 expo where hardware manufacturers, software developers, and publishers from the video game industry present new and upcoming products to those that can afford to go and all the press and top game reviewers who get invited. The event is held every year at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and this year it took place between from 12–14 June. The main event is the press conferences held by the top gaming companies in the 3 days just before, which is watched by millions across the world. Unfortunately not every game company can hold a conference to showcase their games, below is a list of the companies that did.

  • Electronic Arts
  • Microsoft XBox
  • Bethesda
  • Square Enix
  • Ubisoft
  • Sony PlayStation
  • Nintendo

I have decided to break from my usual game review format to give you guys a little sneak peek of some of my favorite picks from E3. I would also like to emphasize that these are my personal top picks, the games I thought stood out the most and which intrigued me, so there might be a few I am not going to mention. Also due to there being such a huge amount of epic games that were mentioned in the conferences, I will be doing a two part series for this. The first part are games I found interesting and new and I will be saving the best games for part two of this series which you will be able to read next week. So let's get right into it.

Fallout 76

source

Fallout is back, this time we only had to wait three years as appose to the seven year wait between Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, this time with the title of Fallout 76. Bethesda is adding in the much requested multiplayer, allowing players to work together in the irradiated wasteland of the Fallout series, where they’ll be able to work as a team, build settlements, forage supplies, and fight off any monsters this world can throw at them. When that gets boring you can even turn on your friends and start fighting each other. They decided to make things even crazier this time round, where players will be able to find nuclear launch codes, then launch atomic bombs at each other. This will probably be on Kim Jong-un Christmas list, seeing as he can't do it anymore after the peace talks. I loved the last game and put in some serious hours, but I must admit it was pretty lonely exploring the vast waste land all by my lonesome, having some friendly faces there to join me will surely be an most epic adventure.

Gears 5

The next chapter in the Gears of War series will only be coming next year, and it’s adding a new main character, who appeared in Gear of War 4. Unlike the previous game, Gears of War 5 focuses on Kait Diaz, the daughter of Reyna Diaz, who was an outsider of Locust descent. The developer team have also added what looks like some new landscapes, Arctic and jungle environments, which is a refreshing break for the standard feel the series has had. There are also a range of new monsters to test your chainsaw-gun out on. This will remain a Microsoft exclusive game, only available on Microsoft Windows and Xbox. I have honestly never played Gears of War, but I hear it's a party bag load of fun, so I think I will try get my hand on an Xbox and give it a go very soon, so definitely check back here in a few weeks for a review.

Devil May Cry 5

This is not one of those games I'm personally very much into myself, although I did really enjoy the trailer and it's a great hack and slasher which is fun to play if you are more into the Manga scene. Fans have been patiently waiting for a true sequel to previous game Devil May Cry 4 since 2008, and now finally Capcom has unveiled Devil May Cry 5. There was a slew of games which were more like reboots of earlier titles or remastered versions of the last game. The new game comes with a brand new character Nero, who has one pretty bad ass robotic style arm that can cause some insane havoc, which will definitely come in handy when taking on demonic hordes. This will be launching sometime next year and will be available on all platforms.

Halo Infinite

This was Microsoft's opening title at this year's E3 press conference, and it was met with thunderous applause when Halo Infinite was announced. This game is a fan favorite and has a massive following, many of my friends decided to stay loyal to Xbox solely based on being able to play Halo. There’s not really a whole lot to go on, but what we do know that it’s being developed by 343 Industries and that the infamous Master Chief will be returning. The game is powered by an all-new Slipspace Engine which is what is behind the trailer’s impressive visuals. According to Xbox head of marketing Aaron Greenberg, Infinite is a "bigger and bolder" Halo game than ever before and will be going back to the roots of the Halo franchise.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

This. Is. Sparta! No, but seriously, this really is Sparta and all the wonders of ancient Greece. This time round, Assassin's Creed Odyssey places much more emphasis on the role-playing elements than any of previous games in the series. Ubisoft Quebec has decided to add what I consider a pretty awesome new feature to the series, that of dialogue options, which will allow players to have a more personal experience and result in multiple different endings. Assassin's Creed Odyssey gives you a choice of main character Alexios or Kassandra, each having a slight different play style and skill tree from what I can gather. Depending on your choice, both characters inherit the broken spear of king Leonidas I, yes the same Leonidas who stood strong with his army of only 300 against the god king. This will be the eleventh major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, and they have been churning them out every year since 2007. I have always loved the Assassin's series, although I did not enjoy the last game as much, and this does somehow feel very much similar, but I am pretty excited to for the story.

I will be continuing the best picks from E3 2018 next week, same time same place. I have especially saved my personal winners for the next upcoming post. Let me know which games from this year's announced upcoming titles you can't wait to get your hands on, and if you're not sure go take a look at the different conferences. There are some breath taking games coming out very soon, so until next week, have a kiff vibe.

What a great idea! I'm glad you are doing an in-depth look at the E3 expo. I might not take the time to check it out on my own and I love seeing this stuff. I used to be a gamer when I was younger and time doesn't permit me to play very often anymore. I live vicariously through your posts and my son's games and stories. LOL. I remember when Halo first came out and how epic it was to be able to interact with a game that way. The new release shown above looks so good. They just keep getting better. I will be telling my kid about the new Assassin's Creed in a few minutes. It is his favourite franchise and Odyessy looks AMAZING!!! I will be looking forward to the future parts of the series.

Hahahaha you live vicariously through these posts, you made my day, thank you. There are some amazing titles in the pipeline, wait until Friday for what else there was, mind blowing. I'm with your son on the new Assassin's game, I even decided to watch 300 again the other night, like that they are taking the Ancient Greece angle, I think it could be amazing.

I have a better idea. How about a flag for begging?

That's always a better idea.... hahahaha

My short list of games I loved the look of at E3 2018:

Forza Horizon 4 (Seasonal British countryside setting and 60fps will guarantee greatness)
Cyberpunk 2077 (Everything about it!.. Just everything)
Resident Evil 2 (Happy they went TPS, perfect mix of solid gameplay/atmosphere)
Spiderman (So colourful and high energy, it looked brilliant)
Ori & the Will of the Wisps (2D platforming greatness)
Crackdown 3 (Substantial facelift combined with the carnage the series is known for - hopeful)

Thanks, I will definitely go back and check out the last 2 games you mentioned, there was so much, I think those two must have slipped through the cracks. I am really looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077 it looks next level, and based on what they have brought it the past it's going to rock. Thanks for the comment.

I used to be such a huge fan of the Assassins Creed Series, but at some point during and after Assassins Creed 3, I felt like the series has been spiraling downwards slowly.

Unity wasn't what I hoped it would be at all, Rogue was okay but sadly really not more than that. I really liked Syndicate but felt like it wasn't all that important in the grand scheme of things.

Started to see some Let's plays of Origins and disliked it quite a bit. I can't really see Odyssey changing that all that much.

I know exactly how you feel, I was a huge fan as well, Unity was a bit of a let down and then they saved it with Syndicate and then lost it with Origins. Maybe it's because they are more concerned with pumping out a new Assassin's each year, rather than making sure the game is what the fans want, I would make rather patiently wait a few months more and get a great game. Yeah my first impressions of Odyssey was that they just took Origins and game it a new story and a new skin.

Another thing that annoyed me greatly, arguably the most annoying thing in general is the entire disregard for the present time story line.

I know that not everyone enjoyed this part of the game, but it was actually a major part of what got me and kept me interested in the game in the first place.

The present day templer/assassin conflict was interesting, but after Desmond died in 3, the whole thing ended up being pretty boring, bland and lead nowhere. Very sad.

I like that you collected the most interesting information from the E3 exhibition. I'm not into games like I used to. What would play the game is a little time. But nevertheless, it is interesting to me to learn news from this industry and in what direction it develops.
I like to see how the series of famous games develop. The fans will be happy.
My favorite from this list is Assassins Creed. Although I've seen some negative reviews from fans. But I think that this will be a decent game both in graphics and in the plot. The game will be given attention. Especially considering the fact that the schedule and opportunities are constantly developing. Variants of dialogues are something that was missing. Players will now have more choice and will influence the outcome of the events. This is the game that I will definitely not miss :)
Thank you, I liked it, I'll wait for the next part ...

Thanks for the comment @frank1in yeah the Assassin's has been a sensitive topic for a lot of the fans. What we have seen from the trailer game play looks pretty much exactly like the Origins and I felt like the cut scene animation looks rushed or could have been much much better.

Devil May Cry 5 was one of the games that surprised me most in this edition of E3, because it is assumed that Capcom was working with what was a remake that had very good reviews, but apparently the character does not stick much with the fans, now they returned to the old formula but with new improvements, I hope it gets its purpose because the bar is high.

It's an incredibly useful and specific game review ! :)

Thats a very interesting game. I didnt hear about it before. Nice characters and costumes. Have a nice Weekend :)
