Magic: The Gathering - Wizards of Nope - Deck Overview 12

in #games7 years ago (edited)

This deck is an experiment. Blue is widely considered the strongest color in Magic, but it can be hard to play effectively since so many decks focus on slowing the game and controlling what happens during all turns. This means many cards get played, and mana gets spent very fast. Blue does not do a lot of mana ramp. Blue can draw a lot of cards though, and artifacts will hopefully help even out the mana problem.

Arcanis Talrand

Arcanis the Omnipotent and Talrand, Sky Summoner are both in this deck as potential generals. Arcanis costs a lot, but he can build card advantage and bounce himself from harm's way in a pinch. Talrand rewards the player for using all the "nope" cards by providing free drake tokens.

The deck has a Wizard Tribal sub-theme, partly because wizards tend to have cool abilities, and partly because I want to cast Docent of Perfection to boost them all. There is also a sea monster sub-theme that has a chance to literally wash away an opponent's defenses, leaving the player with a few big creatures and a chance to swing hard for a win.

There are several cards I would like to add, including Apprentice Wizard and Caged Sun, both of which would help boost mana ramp. There are several other blue cards that may be better options than the ones I have chosen, too. This deck has not been playtested extensively, and remains a definite work in progress. I advise against copying it, but please do let me know if you find inspiration here. I am always open to suggestions, too.

I am considering splitting this into two separate decks, one with Talrand and wizards, the other with Arcanis and sea monsters. Why not Talrand with the sea monsters? He's a Merfolk, right? But he has no protection from Kederekt Leviathan or Whelming Wave board wipes, while Arcanis can bounce himself. His deck would focus on blink effects and tapping opponents' permanents for board control, with more board wipe options as backup. Meanwhile, Talrand and his wizard buddies can play a tribal nope game all day long.

I used to play a blue deck I called "the poke deck." It was half mana and half everything else. While others were struggling to get out their first creature, I had an army of Tims and Ornithopters and shit just poking them for one mana at a time. I have actually killed with an Ornithopter. LOL
A friend made an artifact deck designed to destroy mana just to beat my poke deck. Well I had 35 mana in that deck so I still won, and he was so mad he dismantled that deck. 😂
