Magic: The Gathering - Commander Deck Overview 3

in #games7 years ago (edited)

Here's a second white and blue deck, this time built around direct combat damage with evasion and protection rather than the previous deck's control strategy. This deck was split off from the Medomai deck when I decided I needed to focus on Bruna and her angels as their own thing instead of trying to use her as a support for Medomai or vice-versa.

Bruna

Bruna wants enchantment auras in her deck. She also wants enchantment auras in other players' decks. She doesn't care where they are on the battlefield, in your hand, or even in your graveyard. If she hits the table and has a chance to attack or block, she takes what she wants and she keeps it. In classic Voltron style, this commander likes to stack up a bunch of cards with bonus effects to maximize her power. If she can get +6 damage with double-strike and unblockable, it means an means auto-win in one hit.

Of course, good deck design with a 6 CMC commander necessitates having some other stuff on hand, too. Other creatures lean toward humans and angels with life gain effects or evasion and some minor tribal effects for both species. Any of these creatures can also use the aura enchantments Bruna wants, and she can take them for herself when it becomes convenient.

This deck has more of the flavor of a white deck with all the protection effects and life gain. There is a bit of control inherent in blue, but it is much more subdued than with Medomai. Also, like the Medomai deck, this deck could be used with Daxos of Meletis for an alternative commander, or to create a subset deck for Tiny Leaders games.

This deck is still a work in progress, and there are several cards I am tempted to swap out. More than the previous decks, this shows how a good deckbuilding strategy can feel like a handicap. One wouldn't think 100-card decks in a singleton format would feel restrictive, but it is. There are so many great aura enchantments to consider, and the creatures and support spells can't be safely ignored. I am currently considering swapping out a couple land cards for mana artifacts, and swapping in some lower-CMC cards to change the mana curve for the early game. Needless to say, this isn't a hyper-competitive deck yet, but it's already a lot of fun for casual games.
