What to buy in October - Fruits and Veggies Monday

in #fruitsandveggiesmonday7 years ago (edited)

I went to the green market in my lunchbreak today. I needet some lettuce, apple, walnuts and vegetables for the dinner. What really disturbed me that even there on the green market two or three market stalls sold strawberries. Don't get me wrong. I love strawberries! But who wants to eat them in October? They are not growing on the strawberry fields or in the gardens anymore. They need glasshouses or need to be imported. That's just an example, of course! I try (and sometimes I fail) to buy what's local and on season over here in Germany. Or at least Middle Europe. And of course I buy bananas, pineapples and avocado every now and then. I know, that they are not growing in Middle Europe. But there are things that are unnecessary in my opinion.

Here is my list of things that are on season now in October. This is my this week's contribution to #fruitsandveggiemonday initiated by @lenasveganliving. Thank you for this beautiful challenge. Again, this list doesn't claim to be complete and it may be different to where you guys live.

Sort:

You are completely right, there are things than one really can afford to do without.
Strawberry which are out of season are not even sour anyway, let alone sweet, they are simply tasteless. So, I don't buy it anymore either in autumn.
Looking at those kale picture of yours did inspire me to use it as an alternative veggies for a certain indonesian recipe.
Next friday there would be a "Bauernmarkt" in my neighbourhood. I would buy it and then share the recipe in my blog. ;-)

Excellent and informative post! I also have been trying to continue to get better about buying in-season produce. I think it is a fun challenge to change up our menu of meal prep for each season, as well!

Thank you! You are so right!

Very impressive and insightful entry my Dear @pusteblume. Thank you so much, this is very well put together. I absolutely love it 🍅🍇🍏

Regarding the strawberries you are absolutely right, although they may be an occasion that semone needs them for whatever reason............maybe a romantic evening lol.

We have them in canada all year round, but they usually come from Florida, which is not too far from here. Although our seasonal, Ontario grown are the best 🍓💚🍓 @originalworks plus tip!

Thank you, Lena! For the nice words and for the tip. You are so nice!

Always a a pleasure my Dear 🌸

I love this post, it's very helpful. I also always try to buy locally and in season but sometimes it's hard... a little tip: it's called "lettuce", not "salad"

Oops, yes! 😂 In German Salat is made of Salat and in English you use lettuce to make a salad. It was way too late in the evening to be concentrated well enough! But thank you!
(It was a test, who reads the article carefully... 😜🤣☺️)

✍🏻 Error corrected. Mission accomplished!

Ohhhh! 😃 Again! Thank you so so much! That increases my motivation even more!
Congratulations to the other winners! Well deserved! 🥂🍾

So delicious looking. Certainly, quite a few items available now which we didn't have when I was living there

Hehehe! Yes, I noticed this as well. All the colors, I did not see like five years before. Purple carrots, cauliflower and potatoes, white and striped eggplants, yellow tomatoes and watermelons. And then all the new sorts of fruits and vegetables!

That is pretty cool!! As long as they are grown organically and all that jazz. When I went to visit my hometown, the weekend market had stuff imported from Italy and such. I was a bit sad about that.
