Minerals from Spain

My contribution to the #fridaysrock by @nat-expressions

image

I found this mineral kit in Barcelona and it was a nice present for my son to add to his collection.
Last week I started the series for #fridaysrock with the first piece my son got. For some time he has collected different stones and minerals. Now I am left with his treasures at home. Photographing is not the only challenge. I realized that even if I can see the names written next to them I know nothing about them and it is worth to research and learn something more.
But I do not want to post something boring
What I would like to do next, is to show you a closer look of that kit and where these 12 pieces came from.

HALITE

image

Halite is also known as rock salt. The piece comes from Cardona (Barcelona).
In winter time when the roads are covered with snow and ice, the method used for clearing is a solution made with halite.

CALCITE (CALCITA ESPATICA)

image

Calcite is a carbonate mineral. Quite common and can be found everywhere. This one comes from Dima (Vizcaya).

SIDERITE

image

Siderite is an iron mineral. Nice rusty coloured piece from Sierra Almagrera (Almeria).

GYPSUM (YESO SACAROIDERO*

image

Even without knowing the meaning of the sacaroidero in Spanish, I was about to say how this piece looks like lump of sugar. It comes from Cuence.

FLUORITE

image

This one is from Berbes (Asturias) and it is a mineral form of calcium fluoride. It can be found in different colours and it is wide spread.

AZURITE

image

Azurite is a soft copper mineral. One of my favourite, it is so colourful.
Usually It has deep blue colour which can fade when the mineral is exposed to light, heat.
Found in Almeria.

ARAGONITE

image

Aragonite is a carbonate mineral. Like the calcite. The difference is in their crystallization.
This small piece comes from Minglanilla (Cuenca)

BARYTE or BARITE

image

Another piece from Barcelona region – Montseny.
This mineral is consisting of barium sulfate.
It looks so very much like snow or better to say ice, frozen water.

RED GYPSUM (YESO ROJO)

image

Lovely red or better to say rusty colour. Another favourite of mine.
It is found in Guadslajara.

CRYSTAL GYPSUM (YESO CRISTAL)

image

Another gypsum sample with distinctive crystal. It comes from Almeria.

ANHYDRITE

image

Anhydrite is a mineral—anhydrous calcium sulfate
That piece looks pretty dry and no wonder the name means the mineral that is lacking water.
This sample is from Zaragoza.

CALCITA ACARAMELADA

image

One more calcite with nice caramel colour from Granada.

Hope you have reached by far and I appreciate very much your time to view my post.

Great post @nelinoeva . I was just out digging pink halite in the desert two weeks ago. Have a look.

Thank you very much for dropping by. 😀
Wow, that is a lot and nice colour.

Thank you very much for adding this to our #fridaysrock tag. I'm sure it took quite some time for all of your photographs. The differences in rocks from around the world are amazing. There is so much variety that it never gets boring learning more about them...or looking at them.

Thank you for dropping by. It was indeed the longest time I spent on a post. 😀
Now I am looking for the next Friday post what to prepare.

I can't wait to see what you post next! :)
