Freewrite #6 - Curry

I won’t lie. I freakin’ despise curry! Cumin is the main spice inside curry and I have a violent allergic reaction when I eat it. Having said that, here is my story.
When I first moved to Pasadena, California in 2006, a buddy of mine helped me find my first rental spot. Absolutely nothing glamorous, this was a garage apartment that had no running water or any sort of cooking options. This was literally 4 plywood walls, a bed, one window and an air conditioner. No bathroom. No washer and dryer. Zilch.
Hell, I was thankful just to have my own spot. It beat sleeping on couches.
The woman that sub-leased the unit to me was of Indian descent. She had two rooms available, but only found me to rent the one room. She didn’t know anyone that would rent them both, so I would have to do because the note was due and my rent helped.
So, here I am, in the big city. I’m working temporary job assignments with no transportation. I have to ride the bus every day for six months. My daily commute was 5 hours. This was a 3 hour ride into town and a 2 hour ride home. In order to make sure I was at work on time, I had to wake up at 4:00 am, walk into the main house to take my shower, then walk to the bus stop and start my day.
Imagine waking up and every morning, going to the shower and the entire house wreaks of curry. I don’t mean just a simple whiff of this stuff in the air. NOPE! This was actually in the damn dry wall. The whole house smelled like an Indian kitchen.
I would walk to the bus stop in freshly ironed business casual attire only to smell like I came from an Indian Buffet . . . at 5:00 am. Totally ridiculous, right? You know you smell like curry-stench when the local pimp and prostitute walk up to you and ask you where the buffet is at and why it’s open at 5:00 am?!
Needless to say, any food that has the cumin spice in it triggers these horrendous memories and I just can’t keep the food down. Not do I avoid Indian food, but I now avoid Ethiopian and chili because cumin seems to be the main ingredient.
If you ever want to meetup with me, we’ll have to hang out at a restaurant. Anything BUT Indian food. #NOPE!

Ugh, I don't envy you the long commute! As much as I love curry, I have to admit that smelling like what I ate all day would wear on my nerves! Like your hashtag! 😁
