'The Church' & 'Rainbow Laces' (2 Freewrites)
I missed 2 of the daily freewrite prompts this week, so I decided to catch up today.
Freewrite 1
The Church
Prompt: Church
The bells ring on a Sunday morning, it is a beautiful sound. Some people go to church, some people do not. Some people go occasionally, some people go every day. Some people only go for weddings, christenings and funerals.
Some people are praying to God but in a different way.
Does that make you a good person? Is that the measure of the person you are? Does your attendance determine your own judgement day.
The truth is no, because what makes a person is the goodness of their soul. You may look to God for guidance, but you cannot mask behind your sins by going to church alone.
It is one thing to have faith and one thing to ask for forgiveness. Do you live for the good and peace of mankind? Or do you live solely for your own needs?
Surely, that is what makes someone the person that they are.

Freewrite 2
Boots And Rainbow Laces
Prompt: Lace
The great thing about growing up in England, is following the national sport of Association Football (soccer).
The bad thing about growing up in England, is having to suffer the ups and downs of the England national football team. Don't mention penalty shootouts.
But there is one thing, there are no openly gay players playing in the top leagues. It is 2018, but the culture is such, that no player wants to come out.
Justin Fashanu, a very talented footballer did so in the 1990s, but that did not go so well for him. He had his troubles and eventually committed suicide.
Last November, one weekend, both football and rugby teams, wore rainbow laces to highlight the discrimination in their respective sports.
Will it change? It feels like we are still 100 years behind the times.
I'd like to think that the first player who does come out as gay, will receive the respect from supporters and team mates, that they deserve. They will certainly get respect from me.

So true...it's about the person, not the religion they claim. A god shouldn't have to tell you what is right and what is wrong. Nor should you be able to hide behind one when you do wrong things. 'Because god....I did X' doesn't, shouldn't work, in this modern world.
As for the coming out and gay players...slowly but surely it will happen! :) It takes society a long time to get comfortable with things, even though they've always been a part of our culture in one way or another.

Ain't that the truth, lol. You never know. Saw the prompt for today, SPA...and my mind started jumping up and down. Not sure why...but it did. Will the timer be my friend or my enemy today?
What you wrote about the church is the plain truth, our attendance in church is not a parameter to be saved. We all need to check our inner man and soul.

I completely agree that it's the goodness of a person, of their reasons for their actions, that makes them who they are. Not to build some sort of castle for themselves in heaven but to improve the world that we are in.
My heart breaks for Justin Fashanu, and all those who are scared to come out in who they love, for having been so horribly treated that he chose to take his life. The time for the end of such disgusting discrimination cannot come too soon.

Thank you for your replies for both freewrites. Possibly the most grounded freewrites I have done recently, so I am happy for the responses. In the case of 'rainbow laces,' I am sure that things will change one day. Hopefully that person will get the support from fans. I'd like to think so.
