The Atlas Part 5: The Next Lesson

The story so far:
Thomas has an Atlas that was given to him in Santa's grotto, when he was a boy.
10 years later, he was told that he could put his finger on a place that he would like to go, and believe.
Thomas is about to watch a band called Texas with Maria.
Maria has also travelled via an Atlas, but we don't know her story yet.

Part 5: The Next Lesson
Thomas left the concert hall with Maria. They knew that they needed somewhere quiet to talk.
There was a late night cafe open across the road. Thomas bought two cups of coffee and they sat down to talk.
“So, you have an Atlas too.” said Thomas.
“Yes,” replied Maria. “It was given to me when I was younger.”
“Was it Santa’s grotto?” asked Thomas.
“Yes,” replied Maria. “The same as you.”
“So why has he brought us together?” asked Thomas.
“He wanted me to give you the details of lesson two.”
“What is lesson one?” asked Thomas.
“You have to believe,” replied Maria. “You passed that test. Nick told me about lesson two earlier today. We both have to pass this test individually.”
“Where is Nick?” asked Thomas. “He came to see the concert too.”
“Nick had to go,” said Maria. “There was some problem with vandals. He told us to enjoy the Atlas. We can use it whenever we want. But we have to learn something. We have to learn not to need the Atlas.”
“What does that mean?” asked Thomas.
“I think we'll know when we pass the test,” replied Maria.
“He also said that we needed to do this separately. Therefore, we both need to go our separate ways and begin our journeys.”
“So, are we his students. What is the purpose of all this?” asked Thomas.
“I think he wants a new Santa,” replied Maria.

I was wondering how you were going to fit this prompt in and you did a good job of it. Here I thought they were going to go on a journey together but not now. And that last sentence has me really intrigued. Great story! : )
The story is coming along pretty nicely. It's very interesting that the two of these are brought together with the same Atlas. I'm curious to see what more happens, and where else they are led to go.
I have to admit, I'm (kind of) making it up as I go along; but I am starting to have ideas for plot strands.
I'm considering taking this outside the prompts and turning it into a longer story.
I totally understand and that will be interesting if you decide to go there!
