Mason Jars

Mason jars are everywhere I look. We did a lot of canning when I was a kid and we were eating out of our garden all summer fresh and all winter too.
But the canning jars we had were very different from the mason jars available here in the States.
I didn't know much about canning here until I ended up with the homesteading bug and started to look into all of the ways of preserving food in a modern way.
Wait, I think it really started with my then husband being totally into fishing and coming home with lots of tuna all the time.
He went fishing way too often for us to be able to eat all he caught fresh - and did I mention that I really didn't like fish that much?
Well, I do like the Tuna and of course, there is no way that we wanted for anything to go to waste.
So, I started canning tuna and we still do that quite a bit if we have a windfall of fish.
Now, I also can beans and soups and other stuff I like to be able to preserve and have as a quick meal.
I am also drinking out of canning jars. I used to like fancy glasses and beautiful dishes but our lifestyle and our house are not set up for doing that. The glasses I really liked and had 12, to begin with, are reduced to one. And I go out in the yard, carrying my drink (water) with me. A mason jar is so much sturdier.
I know that now, the hipsters like to use mason jars. Recently, we were at a friends wedding where each guest got a mason jar with a handle. That was your glass for the night and your gift to take home.
The thing which is bad about mason jars being hip as water glasses, candle holders and more, is that it is hard to pick a bunch up for cheap at a garage sale. Actually, I have seen people trying to resale the jars they got for a party or a wedding for more money than a new one would cost in a store.
Really? People! Really?
Get a hold of your greed!!!

Here is an article I wrote on canning fish
And one of our early podcast episodes about - you guessed it!! - canning fish.

I keep seeing rows upon rows of canned tuna... must've been hard to eat them all...
Had no idea hipsters are into mason jars, but that probably explains why there were so many at a store that deals in cute household items, like 'Home sweet home' signs. I was looking for a house-warming gift for a friend and ended up buying a jar for coffee... for myself, of course!

hahahaha
That can happen. And yes, they are at those stores and probably cost a lot more than at a regular market...

It amazes me to see the jars making a comeback for many uses. When I first saw them on store shelves, being sold with drinks in them I was like "What the heck? Who would want those?" Now they are all over. My best friend is teaching me canning. So far I learned to make applesauce, sauce and salsa. I can't imagine the smell after canning all that fish, lol.

Wasn't bad. tuna is not as fishy smelling like a lot of others... and we had all the doors open... :)

I don't blame you. Too bad I never thought of canning fish. I miss fishing though. Maybe I will stop by the town farmers market for some. Not sure if I want the smell in here, even though my cat will most likely not mind.

This is an American thing I can't fully understand: why do you drink from a jar? Get some glasses! Lol!

Because they don't break!! I couldn't understand that with my German mind either - but I am here way too long now lol
It's practical...

I'm pretty sure I managed to break some jar too in my life, lol!

I have canned many, many things in my life, but never tuna!! Wow!

We live in San Diego and you can fish them here... I wouldn't buy any to can - that is for sure...
