Not smart Kit thought at her. She stopped just shy of thinking dumb, Shabron imagined, but there was no twinge of a tone of judgement in Kit's telepathic connection. Just a simple observation. Shabron ignored Kit. Kit might be perfectly happy chasing and eating squirrels, but Shabron not only felt sad at a life of nothing but what they had, she also hungered for... danger? companionship? beer? All three seemed inextricably intertwined.

The lithe youngster petted the lynx reassuringly, what's the worst that can happen? And then the Shadland she'd been leading away oh-so-stealthily began bucking and rearing and braying and kicking and generally making such a racket she couldn't imagine the brainless earless undead of her clan's campfire stories wouldn't have heard. Indeed, shocked into stillness, Shabron was still staring breathlessly at the beast when the inn door opened and a voice whistled out, "She's not keen on being nicked."

There were words after, but Shabron had scuttled to the high grasses, presuming that's where Kit had disappeared to. The voice went one at a distance, but she could only hear one word out of three, "But...leave...there's...fire...you."

Shabron cowered among the grasses, sure a fire mage would burn her to a crisp, even amongst his crop of... grass. A glint of moonlight caught her eye. Lynxes are the stealthiest creatures she'd ever seen, but they're always given away, if you know what to look for, by the way their eye catches the light. This glint was mere feet from the silhouette in the doorway. Get him she thought hard, though she was sure Kit needed to be looking her way to even have a chance of hearing her. Nonetheless, Shabron was sure now that she needn't be afraid. Kit could take care of everything.

Why doesn't Kit pounce? she wondered a moment later. And then, aghast and feeling betrayed, she saw it. A whole fish gliding through the air towards Kit. Kit catching it in midair, then pouncing playfully on it again before she sauntered up to the ominous shadow shape, delicious fish dangling from her mouth...
