The Woods (freewrite)

in #freewrite6 years ago

The people sometimes ran to hide into the forest, but then the forest would eat them up, so that was no good. They realized they needed a new place to hide, one that wouldn't eat them up because they were so yummy. But they didn't know any places, see, because they'd really only ever lived in one spot and it was scary.
They didn't want to leave and in the dark, they whispered that to each other and nobody heard. So when the sun came back up and the monsters were gone, they stood up and they walked slowly 'cause then maybe night would come again and they wouldn't really have to go. They waved goodbye to the forest that had scared them so much and one by one, they left it behind and soon, they forgot it was ever there. They forgot what they were running from, about the monsters who came in the night, about the trees who suddenly seemed all too close.
Here, in this new place, there was no woods. There was not much nature at all really and that was all good and fine 'cause if they knew one thing, they knew they didn't want that around them, didn't want to feel the branches wrapping around their frail necks. So, they pretended they'd never been in the forest and that they'd never seen the monsters. And they didn't tell their children about the monsters either, 'cause they thought who knows what they might remember?

But one kid remembered. He was scrawny and the other children didn't like him all that much 'cause he never knew how to play with them, so he always stuck out like a sore thumb. Only sore thumbs don't stick out, 'cause you scrunch them up real tight into your fist and maybe then the pain goes away, right?
Right.
So anyway, this kid, see, he remembered things. Things that nobody ever told him about and he saw the monsters in the night. He closed his eyes and when he looked out there he was, back in the forest and the ghouls were running after him. Nameless, faceless, calling out after him in that real long screech they had, you know? And he ran deeper and deeper into the woods, hiding himself away from the monsters that wouldn't go away.
And then, he'd find the trees. He was different, more than he let on, and he saw in his dreams the trees, awful, entwining, claw-like. And he saw that his Mum and Dad never went near the forests and neither did the others and he thought he knew why. Because the forest killed someone long ago, it just ate 'em up whole. He sometimes wished he could tell the other children, but he couldn't, because children don't listen. They thought the little boy was crazy and they laughed and they howled and then they grew up, as kids are wont to do.
And when some of them decided they'd go out into the forest, there was not much he could do to stop them. They'd only laugh if he told them about the twigs, so he said nothing instead. He watched them as they packed and as they waved their goodbyes and he knew the monsters would be coming. He knew that one of them, the tall one with the red hair that stuck out funny would make it. He'd survive the forest and crawl out and he'd try to come back. And he'd lead the monsters right here, to their new spot.
So, the boy left his brothers and sisters to die, because they didn't want to listen. He set out to find someone else who knew about the monsters and the forest.

And he did.

Who? Who else knew about the monsters and the forest? What were they like? I want to know...

Right."

This made me smile :) I'm glad I made you curious, although I'm not entirely sure I know either...maybe we'll find out someday, though.
