You tell me “desperate” and I think “WE”. We are desperate. We have been for 2 decades now. But not desperate enough to do what must be done. la culebra se mata por la cabeza, the saying goes (you kill the snake from the head), meaning that the solution to a problem has usually a root and it is only by aiming at the root that you can solve the problem.

Every day, I read news of desperate people who commit desperate acts. Mothers kill their infants, people jump onto the subway’s rails, people leave the country even on foot, fully aware that they can even die in the attempt. Recently, a boat sank near Trinidad and Tobago. More than a dozen Venezuelans were lost.

We witness every day desperate actions in our desolate streets. They look desolate not because they are almost empty of people, but because the people that walk our street and the

houses and buildings and sidewalks, transmit a feeling of desolation, of abandonment, of desperation. People eat garbage, sell their belongings or trade them for trifles, steal shopping bags and even the food that others are eating (they snatch it from their hands and mouths).

Desperate times demand desperate measures, they say. I guess we have not made the rest of the world desperate
enough. There isn’t anything else we can do, except self-immolation.
