The Noise

The cubby house was designed and decorated as the home for different sea creatures. There were big sea shells placed inside and around the house that served as the beds of the fish and other animals. Children were loving it!

Especially Jack, who enjoyed pretending to be a shark. He swam around the cubby house hoping to get someone he could gobble up. As he grabbed Molly's arms, Jack said in an authoritative voice, "I'm gonna eat you!"

Molly screamed and ran to the big pretend-boat nearby. Jack followed her. Molly yelled out, "You can't get me! I am safe on a boat."

Jack swam away and went back to the cubby house. Suddenly, a loud shattering noise silenced everyone in the area. The teacher, Mrs. V., rushed to where the noise came from to check what it was. It was the sound of a glass breaking, except that it was not just a simple glass that's used for drinking. It was the mirror ornately embellished with seashells that was securely anchored to the wooden wall surface. Mrs. V also found a big rock on the floor. She quickly ran to get a broom and a dustpan to sweep the broken glass pieces.

Mrs. V counted all the children as soon as she finished cleaning up the mess. There were only eighteen. She was praying that the other two children were safe and did not get hurt. She looked around and found the two boys giggling mischievously behind the cubby house,. Obviously, a rock was thrown at the mirror that caused it to break. "How else would it happen?" Mrs. V thought to herself.

"Did you do it?" the teacher asked the boys. "Please tell me the truth," she added. But the boys continued to laugh. Mrs. V spotted Molly looking from the distance. "Molly, come here, please," she called.

Molly obligingly approached the teacher. Mrs. V then spoke to Molly and said, "Molly, I know that you were playing with the boys earlier. Did you see what happened?"

Molly responded, "Yes, Mrs. V."

Mrs. V asked her, "Who threw the rock at the mirror? Was it Jack or Nate?"
