No Escape: 5 Minute Freewrite

It had been five weeks since the first night she was awakened with some sort of creepy crawly skittering across her face in the dark. She had nearly come unglued, jolting upright out of a dead sleep, screaming loud enough to bring down the walls.

It had literally taken an hour before she could stop shaking and shuddering at just the thought of some sort of bug crawling across her face. They had said they would call the exterminators the very next morning, but she didn’t think they actually would. They just thought she was crazy. That’s why she was locked in here in the first place. Crazy. Mad. She was “mental” they said. They never fucking believed her!

She sat in her room… her “cell” as she called it, but they hated that, too. They’d make that “tsk tsk” sound if she referred to it as her cell in the group room or in her sessions. Well it was a cell. She wasn’t allowed to come and go as she pleased. They wouldn’t let her keep her art supplies in her room and just the bare white walls, white bolted down furniture and tiny ass window was enough to make even the sanest person go crazy.

It had been okay at first. She had good food, time to paint and create, time to listen to music and plenty of time alone to just BE. But the bugs had still found her. The reason she felt comfortable here was that they told her that the bugs couldn’t get her here. They couldn’t get in.

That was why she didn’t mind them locking her in each night. If she couldnm’t get OUT, then the bugs surely couldn’t get IN. Right?

But that had all changed. The bugs had found her. They were trying to get in her brain again. They would crawl into her ear canal, chew through her ear drum and… she started crying and moaning, thumping her head against the wall to chase the thoughts away.

It would do no good. She had to get them to fumigate again. The special fumigation team would have to come. She had to convince them. It was imperative. She lay in the stillness as the lights across the ward went out. It was lights out time. She was alone again.

Then she heard it… the skittering sound of little tiny feet.

There was no escape.
