Expression - 5 Minute Freewrite (Day 83)
Davinci said that the nose forms the face's character. So, then what are people saying with their nose rings? Sometimes, it's a cultural statement. There are some African tribes have a nose ring given to a bride. (Yes, size is relative...) Other cultures believe that piercing specific areas of the nose will ease the pain of menstruation and childbirth. Where I live, in America, nose rings are mostly symbols of expression and rebellion. Often both.
We are born with our faces looking the way that they do. None of us are given any sort of choice. So many want to change that image in the mirror. Want to let their inner selves shine. By having a nose ring, or any sort of body modification, we can directly influence that first moment, that first impression. We have control how others see us.
To not just be defined by what nature, or possibly illness and/or injury, has given us but by what design we choose is a freedom. The joy to just exist, as you want, appear as you want, be what you want. Even the choice to not add a modification is an expression. Again, no need to change if you don't want to. Our character is what we make of it and how we choose to show it is up to us.
Beautifully said and I couldn't agree more. There should be no more pressure to modify ourselves than there is to NOT modify ourselves and we should do what makes us feel good about ourselves.
I’m helping marianne out today and visiting freewriters, here is the prompt for the next freewrite!

Thank you @byn! Thanks as well for helping Marianne out!!
I agree with you: everybody should express their own look.
Sometimes, however, I feel like I'm becoming the real noncomformist, showing no tattoos nor piercings, nor dyed hair (well...I'm shaved)
I'm the same way! (well..minus the shaved head and my ears are pierced - just single traditional holes) We're such rebels! 😂
Great post. Personally, the things I've always wanted to change have been mostly internal.
Thanks! Minus one thing, ha ok two 😂, I'm the same way. Unfortunately, those internal qualities that we don't want to have are harder to change. We have to want to change them only for ourselves, or else it won't matter (and it won't stick). And it takes a TON of effort. And we can try, and still fail. Sometimes, though, people discover and/or come to terms with who they are when they make a physical change. What is outside can carry to the inside and all that...
True, physical changes can definitely lead to non-physical changes.
I agree with both of you.....surprise there loll
sometimes, I feel, that if you are lacking self-image confidence and you put on something that makes you feel like you look better.....be it clothes, a mask or make-up for those so inclined.........it helps you to get out there to start to realize that being yourself is a good thing and people like you that way.
Then what happens if you take off your makeup, let's say, and go out a month later.
as long as you don't define yourself by the mask that you think makes you interesting....
OMG I need sleep!
sorry for the blown-up book I wrote ......... going back behind the green curtain LOLLL
