The Strangeling Part XIX - (Freewrite # 154 - nothing)

in #freewrite7 years ago (edited)

Greetings fellow Steemians! Here is my 24th "5" minute* freewrite. The prompt is: "nothing".

*Not 5 minute this time, 30 minute ;)

This piece is a continuation of my last freewrite, and the nineteenth installment in an ongoing story. Let's see how long I can keep this up, using the prompts provided!

Freewriting is a daily practice for most poets and fiction writers, designed to loosen up and get things flowing, like stretching before exercise. Visual artists, especially those who draw or paint from life (figures, landscapes, still lives, etc) do something similar in "gesture drawings". After reading several of @poetrybyjeremy's freewrite posts, I got excited to try these again. Many thanks to @mariannewest for hosting this daily freewrite! https://steemit.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/day-154-5-minute-freewrite-thursday-prompt-nothing

I resisted the urge to look away, letting her eyes search mine.

"She's gone, isn't she?"

I nodded.

Apricot sighed, broke eye contact. "Nothing. I can't feel her at all... she's done something to cut herself off from me."

Suddenly I felt frightened. Really frightened. "She's still alive, right?" It was a question, but also a plea.

Apricot nodded. "Yes. Yes, I would have felt it if she'd passed over." She extended a hand to me, and I pulled her to her feet, where she stood, brushing the dust off of her pants and eyeing the Wasps nervously. Her face took on a determined expression. "I'm going with you."

I looked back at the Wasps. "Seriously? After what you've just been through? Do you know what you're in for if you come with us?"

She turned to me, put her hands on my shoulders, and looked into my eyes. I felt an odd pull in the pit of my stomach, and for a second I thought of the belt I had given her, now wrapped around the waist of the technicolor Jesus statue in the abandoned church. She shook her head slowly from side to side, her eyes still locked on mine. "No. But I know what Mia's in for if I don't."

Thanks @isabl09! It probably doesn't make much sense at this point without reading the other episodes lol. But I'm having fun with it.

Can't wait to read your entry and others this evening. All the best :)

The most important thing is to have fun :)

I am now going to have to read back on these. I enjoyed this glimpse. I will try to dig in sometime this weekend. I just started trying to add to a fiction piece this way last week. Well done segment!

Oh cool! Now I want to go read yours too. I'm planning on also reading @freedomtowrite's, and @felt.buzz's as well. I'm very interested in what other writers are doing with this idea.

And thanks for the compliment @wandrnrose7, I'm glad you enjoyed this installment :)

Hey, thanks for the shoutout @bennettitalia! I need to read yours and @felt-buzz also!

I have just finished reading the entire story! I have spent my morning inthralled in your web of fantasy and fiction! I saw somewhere in a comment that you advised @f3nix that this is your first venture into fiction! How can this be??

Had I not read that comment, I would have never believed it in a million years! You said that you write mostly poetry. I can only deduce that writing poetry has honed your writing and visual skills into a very high level! I am enthralled by the story and I cannot wait for the next chapter.

I would love to print this whole story out and spend time pouring over it again because the details and images are so rich. You have quite a way of building plot, characterization, dialogue, mood and setting such as I never thought that I could ever approach in skill. (but I'll keep trying!).

I can see this published because it's much better writing than many works of science fiction I've previously read. Thank you for sharing with us!

Oh wow! Thank you SO much @wandrnrose7 for your kind words, I feel very encouraged by them. I never in a million years would have expected to be writing fiction like this, it sort of came on like a lobster cooking in a pot, I was doing the freewrites and then suddenly there was one I wanted to continue with...

No, I've never written fiction (as an adult at least) until starting freewrites. Poetry in HS and college, then switched over to songs and I've only ever written songs since then. So it's Steemit that's gotten me back into poetry, and now started on fiction.

I'm looking forward to checking out your ongoing series, I just came across part 5 I think, but haven't read it yet... going to go back and read them from the beginning :)

Thank you again <3

It was truly my pleasure and I've got my eye on you! <3

I've missed so many parts of this story! Well that just won't do! I'll be going back through to start from the beginning now. In the meantime, here's my very late delivery of Friday's prompt!

Friday's prompt is brought to you by one of our resident Trolls, Bridgewaterer. He's traveling the town of Freewrite, doing community service as reparations for skimming profits at the Troll Scouts Bake Sale.
