5-minute We-write: Prompt - Idiot

Continuation from Part 5

Jessa was one.

Everyone in the neighborhood was invited. It was a happy birthday party. Daddy even set up a roast.

The front lawn had tables and chairs for the guests. Everyone was chatting and laughing. The smell of roasted meat filled the air.

It was a great cookout. It was a great day.

"Yummy?"

"Yum...meh!" squeaked the little pink cheek as she excitedly basked in the wonders of icing cream on her first birthday cake.

Sophia took a deep breath and let out a happy sigh. She couldn't remember feeling this way for the longest time. It's been a great and adventurous year.

As Derril walked in with a plate of roasted wings, he almost tripped over a toy car that was left on the floor.

Sophia gasped and followed by a laugh, "oh honey, you're an id- "

"Ah, ah, ah, language, Mama!" teased Derril.

"Oops, you're right. Sorry, Dada! My bad! Let me help you with the wings!" she was as swift as a bird.

"Oh and hon, can you take my happy pills, please? It's upstairs, in the dresser drawer. Thanks!"

Derril nodded, the happy pills that kept him sane throughout the 5 months. The happy pills that kept his sanity intact after they got back. His anxiety never went away. It stayed or maybe he had just gotten used to feeling numb. Not dealing with the possibilities.

But not for Sophia. There was so much more to do. So many surgeries left. So much more money to earn. So many more restless nights, checking on Little Pink Cheeks to see if she was still breathing.

He came back down, and handed her the pills.

She shook her head. “It’s for you. I’m done with it.”

He sat with her at the counter and took out two from the bottle.

“Honey, we’ve talked about this. The Happy Pills for a Happy Life. And besides it’s a party. Parties need happy pills.”

She giggled, mouthed “idiot” to him and popped one in her mouth. He smiled, kissed her on the cheek, slipped the other pill back in the bottle when she wasn’t looking and filled up her glass with more juice.
