5-minute Freewrite: Prompt - Birthday Party + Trapped + Face Mask

Continuation from Part 4.

The baby was already crowning. They couldn't keep the labor from happening.

In a few pushes, she was out. Tiny and incubated.

They named her Jessa, meaning God beholds.

Hours turned into days, days turned into months. After what felt like forever, Derril's tiny family of three finally made it home.

Five months.

Five months that were filled with agonising moments, doubts and fears, tears and worries.

Five months that were filled with small leaps of strength, hopes and dreams, and miraculous breakthroughs.

Five beautiful months of life.

The moments spent in the hospital were filled with tubes and machines, prayers and cuddles, face masks and hospital robes, and the numbing scent of hospital supplies.

Whenever the couple felt trapped in their circumstances with one step forward, two steps back, they would somehow be surrounded by support and comfort. It felt like God with skin on, shown by every hug, encouragement, and help by loved ones and strangers alike.

Their little corner in the NICU felt like an unlikely home away from home.

And after 7 months post-hospital, it was time to celebrate.

Colorful strips of paper and balloons hung across the living room, a big 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY' was hung on the front porch, and a special spot was set up with a baby chair and a party table, with all kinds of finger food and drinks that would not only make any child excited, but also every parent happy.

There was a number 1 pink balloon floating behind the baby chair.

Jessa was one.

Everyone in the neighborhood was invited. It was a happy birthday party. Daddy even set up a roast.

The front lawn had tables and chairs for the guests. Everyone was chatting and laughing. The smell of roasted meat filled the air.

It was a great cookout. It was a great day.
