5-minute We-write: Prompt - Well-being

Continuation from Part 3.

Her heart skipped a beat. She held her breath. Her eyes felt hot and all of a sudden, tears streamed down her rosy cheeks as she bit her lips, not knowing what to say.

"Don't you care about my well-being?" Sophia asked.

"Of course," Derril said with a grin. He stood in the grocery aisle butter pecan ice cream in one hand, his cell phone in the other. "My only question, sweetie, was how I should keep the ice cream frozen while I run across town for the french fries."

Sophia sniffed loudly into the phone. "I... I suppose it's not very practical is it?"

Derril tried to cover the laugh that was building in his chest. His wife of four years sat alone in their apartment, five months pregnant with more cravings than hours in the day.

"No, it's not..."

She let out another wimper.

"But it's fine! I will drop this off at home, and..."

"Derril?" Sophia asked, but the line had gone dead.

"Derr... Hello? Are you there? Honey?"

Sophia tried to remain calm while she waited for her husband, knowing he would call back.

And he did, like she always knew.

"Hello, sweetie... The reception was wacky so I had to walk away from the store. I'll be right back, we'll get your fries for dinner, I promise."

"Alright, fine. Hurry!" she let her tongue out with a tease and hung up.

15 minutes later, Derril's pickup truck pulled up on the driveway.

He was holding the melting cup of butter pecan ice cream in one hand and trying to search for his house key with the other when he heard a screeching scream coming from the living room.

It was Sophia.

"Noooooo, my baby!!!"

He dropped the ice cream and rushed to the door, his hands trembled while trying to fit the key into the keyhole, pushing his arm against the door as panic set in.

As the door opened, his face turned pale from the horror set before him.

Blood was everywhere; the sofa, table, tv, and Sophia was on the floor curled up in pain, laying in a pool of blood streaming from underneath her floral skirt.

"Sophia, honey I'm here, hang in there, you're gonna be okay."

There was a sudden gush of adrenaline and a pump of strength overcoming his fear. He took a blanket and wrapped up his bride, carefully carrying her to the truck and rushed to the hospital.

"You're gonna to be alright, Soph... the baby's gonna to be alright. My girls are going to be alright... Dear God, help them be alright! Help us, God!"

Sophia was drenched and shivering in sweat, her eyes were shut with one hand supporting her bloodied lower belly and the other clinging onto the handle. Her face cringed every few minutes from what seemed like waves of contraction hitting her body.

It was a busy afternoon, a 20-minute drive felt like an unending nightmare.

As they reached the hospital entrance, Derril screamed for the medical officers and in a matter of seconds Sophia was rushed to the Emergency Room.

The baby was already crowning. They couldn't keep the labor from happening.

In a few pushes, she was out. Tiny and incubated.

They named her Jessa, meaning God beholds.
