The interstate was filled to overflowing. RVs and semis rolled onto the gravel shoulder to allow smaller cars, vans, and SUVs to pass. Each vehicle carried with it a frightened family, collection of co-workers, or the occasional single person. And each headed for the safe mountains in the distance.
The sea level did not rise as they had been earned. The sky did not rain down fire and rock. The air had not turned putrid and toxic. The threat was not even from a distant world. The entire evacuation was based on the foresight of the nation's greatest seer. In the time of digital communication and instant gratification, to wait for the clear vision of a ancient practitioner seem ultra-counter-culture.
Yet. She had seen the destruction which awaited them all. And she instructed them to run for their lives. To flee deep into the hills and mountains.

It's a frightening scene to see all lanes of traffic heading into town from the Gulf coast. Great #freewrite. 👍
I've never had to be part of an evacuation... Yet. I'm fortunate to live in a place that's so far has not seen this type of ordeal. My sister was in Miami, downtown, last year when hurricane threatened. I spent some nail biting hours watching the news and communicating with her via text message until her phone died and then just plain worried until I heard from her the next day that all was clear. I hope to never have to jump in the car and do this kind of evacuation. It all seems so frightening.
My dad told me stories of back in the 30s my grandpa was on the east coast of the us and saw tons of cars with families and people packing up in a panic because of the Orson Wells War of the Worlds radio broadcast. He was a traveling salesmen for Breck I believe and it was a few years before my dad was born so he was on the road a lot. He said the freeways were packed for miles with everyone leaving Jersey, I think. They had to broadcast a disclaimer saying it was all fiction and Martians really were not flying down.
Yes! I recall hearing about that - incredible! Would have loved to see that event. Although, I probably would have fallen for the storytelling like everyone else

It was apparently very well done. Obviously that hundreds if not thousands of people really thought the whole story was real. I believe you should still be able to get the audio drama and listen to it. Its hard to believe that TV didn't exist back then or barely. So radio and word of mouth was the only social media.
