FACE MASK (5-minute Freewrite)

The face mask slid off her face and fell to the floor. It landed with a clatter and came to rest in the pool of blood by her feet. She never expected the night to end this way.

Around three o'clock that afternoon Alica and Meghan had gotten dressed for the Masquerade Barn Dance and Hayride Jamboree. They wore matching jean bib overalls and red checked farm girl shirts. Their hair was pulled up into high pony tails and tied with bright yellow ribbon. Their matching masquerade masks grinned back at them from the mirror. They looked incredible. At least Meghan thought so. Alica wasn't so sure, and continued to make her reservations known.

"He's never going to ask me to dance," she said. Her shoulders slumped, as the light went out of her eyes. Any hope she carried into the evening was evaporating like fog in the morning light.

"That's where you're wrong!" Meghan straightened Alicia's shoulders and made her look at her reflection. "You are the belle of this ball, and Tip Montrosse would be a fool to pass you tonight!"

And the dance start. And the cider flowed. And the hay ride circled the farm. And teens ran screaming from the haunted trail. And the band played right up to midnight.

That was when Tip walked out of the barn with Meghan under one arm, and his face buried in her chest. Alicia screamed with rage, snatched up a pitchfork, and charged forward.
