The shimmering liquid dripped into the crystal clear decanter resting on the dusty wooden stool.

"There." The old woman scooped up the small bottle with one hand, and corked it with the other. As the hand holding the vial swung down to the open hands of the waiting child, the other grasped the wrist of the man lying on the bed.

The platform he lay on was elevated to allow his essence to flow down and out. She lifted his limp arm, laid it next to his cool body, and turned to the child.

"Remember, we mustn't speak of this. Not once."

"Yes, Godmother," the child said.

"Now, have a drink, my child." She tapped the fingers of her withered hands together in a sequence that reminded the child of a crawling centipede. "You'll have all you need to carry the throne now, my dear."
