Best Friends Forever: 100 Day Freewrite
It was saturday morning when it happened. She remembered it vividly. Its bones rippling under its skin, the sounds of agony it made as it writhed and howled in agony. She will forever remember those sounds. The sounds of cracking bones and skin ripping and tearing. It had never meant to hurt anybody, it had only been lonely. She had taken such good care of it, tried so hard to keep it locked up so nobody would hurt it. It had just been born a little different, there was no reason it hurt it like this.
It had just wanted to play, just wanted to see someone other than her. It had just been lonely and now it was gone. Just because it had looked a little different. It made her sick just to think about it. They way those people had so heartlessly hurt it with no thought as to how it would affect the poor thing. No thought about anything other than themselves.
All it had wanted was some attention and affection, it didn’t mean to hurt anyone. It was so used to being in the dark that it hadn’t expected the sun to hurt, so it had howled and lashed out. It hadn’t meant to hit the little girl off her bike and into the road. It hadn’t meant to get her killed.
She gathered up the remains. She would make sure that it had a proper burial at least. The echoes of the anger, the hatred and violent screams from those that were watching the abuse. That’s all it was abuse, born out of fear. Humans were horrible creatures themselves, when they let the fear and emotion take over. It was mob mentality, that’s all it was. They didn’t even care that they were killing a living being. They wanted their vengeance and they weren’t willing to listen to anyone or anything that would steer them away from their aim.
Tears dropped from her eyes as she gathered up the last of it’s bones and flesh and placed them in her backpack. Her books were still strewn beside the ditch where it had all went down. She didn’t care anymore. Not about school, not about those people, not anything. They had killed the only true friend she had ever had. She hadn’t even realized how much she’d come to love this creature until it was gone.
She hoisted the backpack over her shoulders and walked down the road, her feet dragging with the weight of her despair. She muttered under her breath and said every angry thing she’d ever thought.
The little girl was dead. Her parents lives destroyed. The driver of the car that had hit her? His life was probably forever changed as well… but now HER life was different as well, but would anyone think of her? Of her friend? Of course not, because it had been different and humans hated things that were different.
She felt a calm wash over her and peace started filling her mind, her body. She hadn’t even realized it, but her steps were lighter and she felt an odd feeling of warmth steal over her. An energy and a power… the backpack moved and jostled on her back…
